EZ Keys

Let's face it, even on guitar oriented songs, there's usually some keyboards filling up some space in there. I don't play keys, but I've found a good way to add them to my recordings: EZ Keys by Toontrack. In Logic Pro X, I just assign the app to be my sound source on a given track and the interface opens up. The basic program comes with an assortment of styles, riffs, and patterns that you can browse and find something that matches your song. On the app timeline, that will show up as a series of changes in the key you've selected. Then you can change individual chords, adding 7ths, 9ths, diminsheds, etc, and drag that into the main Logic timeline. It is a bit tricky and it takes a bit of time to learn to use it, but I've used it on a couple of songs that I worked up, and it does add that finishing touch to the song.
The basic package I bought is the Grand Piano. Unfortunately, to get electronic keys, synths or even strings, you have to buy that whole package at full price. BUT, ssshhh, there's a work-around to get different instrument sounds once you've created your keyboard track, at least in Logic. I just move the midi piano track into a new unassigned track, then I go into the sound library on Logic and assign an instrument sound to that track and the midi notes trigger that sound. So my piano track can become a synth, horn, orchestral or other sound. It all takes experimentation, but, as with most of us, I have a lot of time these days.

I've considered EZKeys since I'm already plugged in to Toontracks (EZDrummer). But between my rudimentary keyboard abilities and MIDI editing skills, I can get by. I mean, I can have my 3 year old granddaughter slap the keyboard and through MIDI clean it up into a performance. But the time savings would be nice.
I know a lot of people have "opinions" about such band in a box type tools, but it really helps make a cleaner product to showcase an original song, production ideas, guitar/vocal performances, etc.

I have used EZ Keys in a couple recent recordings. I mix the keyboard sounds fairly low, just enough fill in the overall sound, not up front as a lead instrument. There is the proverbial learning curve, of course. The cool thing is, once I've got my "piano" track set up, I can change the track to another instrument sound, like a jazz organ or even strings.
