Senior year (1971) at Rutgers, me, guitar, and Suzi were about to open the back door of the apartment shared with 5 others. It was right on the edge of the 'ghetto', a not so nice place after dark in New Brunswick, NJ. Instead the door opens from the inside, this 6 and half foot black dude comes running out, with a revolver in his hand. Before we could react, he pushed past us and booked down the street. My roommates had their rent cash robbed, but no one hurt. Some one answered his knock, and let him in without checking who it was. One of my roommates turned and ran out the front door, to a pay phone a block away, only to find it was ripped off the hook. But I guess this is what spooked the gunman into not sticking around.
Cops rushed in both doors with guns pulled, and each one was pointed at poor Fred, a black student who was subletting with us. We all (except Fred) had a laugh at that, but it was mainly stress relief...
