I remember back a few years ago the reason I had to do the repair on the headstock on my McCarty 245 DC and it was do to the 'spaghetti logo' on the headstock peeling of and then eventually breaking. I'd alway thought that this design was a bit chincy and it proved that by coming loose during cleaning. With that and the fact that it broke in two, it was not feasible to try and stick it back on. So, with it off, the headstock was messed up were it had been attached so, I decided to re do the headstock. It was very difficult to try and salvage the head stock tint and I wasn't a real fan of the color anyway nor, am I all that skilled at trying my hand at it so, I decided to sand it down and change the color. When I finished the sanding, I put a couple of coats of Minwax clear coat on it and having located a 'Paul Reed Smith' decal, I placed it on the headstock and sprayed on a couple more coats of the clear coat. At this point it had a blonde tint. I decided to stop there and let the clear coat cure for a while and go back, put on a couple more coats, fine sand it smooth and polish it to a gloss. That was 3 years ago and I'm glad I waited because in that time, it's taken on an aged tint (I had no idea this would occur) that now matches well with the body and the gold leaf decal really stands out against it. The next time I have to restring, I'll see if I can finish up what I started. These pics below sort of shows the transition.

Hard to believe PRS covered up that flamey maple headstock.

I didn't think it looked bad with the original color. There wouldn't be a need to do anything to it had the afixed logo not come off. The dark background enabled that logo to stand out better and maybe was the reasoning behind it. However, I'm still a bit mystified by the transition in shade from when I did the job up until now. I can't tell you what Minwax clear coat I used because I have two different cans. My guess would be Minwax Clear Lacquer but, I also have a can of Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane. I think the Clear Lacquer would be more conducive to the aging process than the Urethane but, I am no expert about this. When I do the final finish on this, it probably won't make a difference which one I use at this point although I'm leaning toward the lacquer.

What's with the shape of the headstock? Did it come that way?

Apparently there have been PRSs without the horny headstock. I did not know that.

Apparently the headstock design has something to do with Carlos Santana when he was 'sporting' (still is?) PRS. So, I believe even this one is a Carlos Santana model. I'll have to google this for a refresher course.
