Just watched The Sting. Other than Walter Winchell, Ray Walston or Burgess Meredith are the only people I am aware of who could have played that roll in the movie.
Also.....same movie.....the wee fellow with the pug nose is perfect for his part. Can't find his name on line.
Next.... whoever played Frank Netty in The Untouchables is perfect for that role.....he even looks mean.
Must be many other submissions. What you got?

How about Jack Palance in City Slickers.
And Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade.
And lastly, Tim Curry as the devil in Legend. Not a great movie, one of Tom Cruises early flicks, and Tim was well known by then so I'm not sure why he accepted the role but he's a damn fine evil one.

Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry franchise. That role was originally written for Frank Sinatra, according to stuff I've read about it.
"The wee fellow with the pug nose is perfect for his part."
Lonnegan's heavy? That's Charlie Dierkop. He was with Newman and Redford in the Butch Cassidy film as Flat-nose Curry (one of the hole-in-the-wall gang).

A remake of the Pink Panther was on satellite here. Made me long for Peter Sellers as the definitive Inspector Clouseau. He was also excellent as Dr Strangelove.

Sean Connery as Bond (of course).
Is it significant we've come up with comparatively few female names?

On the TV show The Big Valley, Bruce Dern once played a villain who tormented Heath when Heath was trapped under a wagon. I thought Dern played a rather hateful part, and he played it well.

Henry,
If you like Dern, check him out in "Will Penny" (1967) and "Nebraska" (2013) if you've not yet seen them.

Henry, If you like Dern, check him out in "Will Penny" (1967) and "Nebraska" (2013) if you've not yet seen them. he was downright despicable in the Cowboys w/John Wayne, killing him. when they were about to shoot the scene Wayne said "America will hate you for this." Dern replied, "Yeah, but they'll love me in Berkeley."
