I was not a big Costner fan until Open Range. He and Duvall were perfect for their respective roles. Others...
* Denzel Washington in anything, especially the counter to Hackman in Crimson Tide. Both were perfect. He was also perfect in Remember the Titans. * Nicholson and Cruise in A Few Good Men * Carroll O'Connor as Archie * Don Knotts as Barney * Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump * Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in LOTR

Henry, If you like Dern, check him out in "Will Penny" (1967) and "Nebraska" (2013) if you've not yet seen them. RE:Bruce Dern I remember as a kid watching a TV drama series "Stoney Burke". Jack Lord (Hawaii 5-0) was Stoney, the rodeo star. It also featured Warren Oates and Bruce Dern in recurring roles as Stoney's friends, perfect foils who caused him all kinds of trouble. Was a fun show. Wiki
More recently you can find Dern in another "hateful" role in Tarantino's Hateful Eight on Netflix.

Henry, If you like Dern, check him out in "Will Penny" (1967) and "Nebraska" (2013) if you've not yet seen them. he was downright despicable in the Cowboys w/John Wayne, killing him. when they were about to shoot the scene Wayne said "America will hate you for this." Dern replied, "Yeah, but they'll love me in Berkeley." A. I had forgotten about Dern shooting and killing John Wayne's character in The Cowboys. B. My wife doesn't like R-rated stuff. I bet Nebraska was good. Haven't seen it.

I gotta be honest, I don't know why Nebraska is rated R. No violence, no nudity.

A great casting director can make or break a movie. My bride, who consults in motion pictures and television, has a lot to say to her clients about casting choices. She wrote about it here. www.etbscreenwriting.com/scandi-noir/

Dwight Yoakam in Sling Blade. I like Dwight but I hated Doyle. That's good acting.

Jeremy Davies as:
•"Dickie Bennet" in "Justified" and
•"Corporal Upham" in "Saving Private Ryan"
What a chameleon!
I don't like everything Tom Hanks has done, but thought that he was also superb in "Saving Private Ryan".
Giovanni Ribisi as
•“Frank Buffay Jr. “ in “Friends”,
•“T-4 Medic Wade” in "Saving Private Ryan” and
•“Marius Josipovic / Pete Murphy” in “Sneaky Pete”

Pretty much everyone was well cast in LOTR, I think. A more "Hollywood" production would have cast a better known and far younger Aragorn. Viggo was age-appropriate and a relative unknown. Kudos around for that!

TD, I've been a Ribisi fan ever since his turn on Friends. He was hilarious. You might also like him in "Heaven" and "The Gift", both with Cate Blanchette.
Saving Private Ryan was a great example of fine casting with topnotch actors. Barry Pepper, Paul Giamatti, Adam Goldberg. I mean if you look at the list it's impressive and all perfectly cast in their parts.

Thanks for the headsup, digiboy: haven't seen either of those movies and love Cate Blanchette, so I may look them up.

Another guy who is something of a chameleon is Damon Herriman, who played white-trash cracker "Dewey Crowe" in "Justified". We were watching an Australian series called "Secret City" and Herriman showed up playing a cross-dressing intelligence officer. Having only seen him previously in character with a southern drawl as Dewey, I was bowled over to learn that he's actually an Aussie.

Anna Friel was very good in the Brit Crime series, "Marcella". Haven't seen her in anything else, so that's all I have t'go on.

Tom Berenger in Platoon. I didn't like any of his movies for a long time after seeing him in that. As was said "Going acting"

I like Bruce Dern in everything he has done. It was sad to see him in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, although he was very convincing.

John Belushi in Animal House Odd you say this, since this movie is what I thought of first. Belushi was excellent, but I think Mark Metcalf was at least close to perfect for this role. Since Spinal Tap was mentioned, Michael McKean nailed his part. John Michael Higgins in Walk Hard should also be mentioned in this.

Cybele Shepherd in The Last Picture Show. I think it was her first movie, although she had experience in front of a camera.

This one may raise some eyebrows but Sylvester Stallone was perfect for the original Rocky, as was Burgess Meredith. After the first one, the series became meh.

For the mo0st part, I'll agree about "Rocky".
I also liked Stallone in "Night Hawks", but saw it many years ago. I'd have to give it another viewing to find out whether or not my opinion has changed. Rutger Hauer played the evil terrorist in that one.
Those are about the only two watchable Stallone movies I can think of.

I liked the last one, Rocky Balboa, and he was good in the two Creed motives. I also like him in the first Expendables.

He does a fine job in Cop Land, very much against type. I was impressed.

LeftyMeister, Check out Denzel Washington in "Man on Fire" and "The Book of Ely" if you haven't already seen them.
Little Dakota Fanning knocked it outta the park in the former and Mila Kunis did a surprisingly (for me) credible job in the latter (and yes: I agree with LudwigVonFender that Oldman was also excellent in BoE).
