With the pandemic still going on, I've been spending more time in my home studio. I now have a bunch of songs recorded that I'd like to share with friends. I'm not a songwriter, so they are all covers of my favorite songs. I need a free hosting site that allows cover songs. I am not looking to sell my mp3's, just have them where friends can get a listen. Soundcloud seems like a good place, but I'm wondering if you have to own the rights to the songs you upload. Any other recommendations?

I have used Soundcloud and covers are not a problem. You upload your MP3, copy the URL of the upload, and share that with your friends.
Another option is Dropbox, but it's not necessarily an audio hosting site; it's a cloud data storage. You email your friends the URL. Here's how it works: nobody has access to anything you hang there, so you first have to grant permissions to access your file(s), by folder name. For instance, you can make a Dropbox folder called My Tunes 'public read only' which means anyone with the URL can view/listen/download anything you have put in the folder. They cannot edit the folder (add/delete files or change any files in there). You can also grant edit permissions to specific people by their email address, which means only those people may add/delete/edit files in that folder. If you grant edit permissions to the general public, that would be bad. This is a quick overview of Dropbox; there's a bunch more functionality available, especially if your friends also have a Dropbox account.

Peegoo, I signed onto Soundcloud as it seemed easier to share than with Dropbox (which I've used for years). But now I've discovered something really weird. I have two computers, an iMac and a MacBook Air. I signed up and uploaded from the iMac, no problem. On my Soundcloud page on the iMac, the share button was right there under the song waveform. But on the Air, when I went to the Soundcloud page, I could see the songs, including one I had shared to FB. But there was no share button on the page on the laptop. So I checked on the iMac, and the share button showed up. Can it be that I have to use the original computer to use the sharing feature?

for all the jams I have run logistics on (Clamfest. March on DC and a few others) I use google drive. Anyone who has participated in these knows I put up an online form or sheet with clickable links that get you the MP3. Sometimes its a link to YT and other times its a link to the google drive where it lives. I also do this for the shared charts. This way you are only emailing links and google gives you 15GB of storage.
I also have DropBox where I put things I want to access from all my devices. I use this for personal things and dont usually share with DropBox but have.
Here is what I have found. DropBox feels like a folder on your machine where as Google drive feels like a web page with downloads. I also found that sharing via Dropbox is a bit more tedious than with Google Drive.
YMMV jus' my 2 cents

You can't simply copy the dropbox URL...you have to click the Share File (or Share Folder button on the right), then a box opens. At the bottom of the box you'll see "Share a link instead." To the right of that is 'Copy Link'. Left click on that, and then you can right click the mouse and select Paste to paste the link, like this: www.dropbox.com/sh/r3v73m1460evz4j/AAAtnsfgbkLGLpOb83GIhP4Ua?dl=0

It does seem that DB is a bit more complicated to share than Soundcloud. But thanks for all the charts, Geno. I copied them onto my DB. So, let's see if this works: my Soundcloud page: soundcloud.com/user-893287378
