I bought an Eastman gold top les paul with P90s a few months back. Beautiful guitar, easily the best made instrument I've ever owned and a joy to play.
So, it's out of it's case and I'm plunking away. Then I have to get up and do something. I put the guitar carefully on its stand, stand up to walk away... and stumble over the cable. Down goes the guitar. Noooooo!!! It's fine, of course, but now there's a little scratch at the top of the headstock. It's a just a tiny scrape, but I feel like a proper dolt. Please, someone tell me I'm not the most dim-witted person in the world.

I put a ding on the top of my Lester GT the first month I had it.
It calls my name every time I look at it. 😂

Because of the exact same thing happing to me on a few occasions over the years I now try and make it a habit to unplug the cable from the guitar. Yes, I know it is easier and nicer to leave it plugged in but for me I have found it is just not worth the risk

You're not the most dim-witted person in the world. I was tidying up some stuff and picked up my cased Telecaster without checking that the case latches were secure. They weren't and the guitar tumbled out onto the hardwood floor. Actually the floor got the worst of it.

That's become a loosely enforced policy around here, LTB. I was less careful when my life revolved around Teles. They're pretty tough. Gibson-style necks? Oooh.... I don't know about that!

3 words. Hanging, guitar, stand.
It could still go over but the base is big enough you will probably go with it. Aw, don't worry about it. Your broken wrist will heal.

Despite my best efforts (and they have been herculean), the gassing from the pickguard (best guess to cause) on my Arctic White LP has gassed off on the finish underneath, where it's now that yellow cream that many of the older Les Pauls get to - but only under the pickgoard. The rest, well, flawless.
I avoid dings but...they happen.
An old maid of mine knocked over my Bass VI and got a dent in the binding. *That* pissed me off, especially since my rule is "Don't TOUCH the instruments or electronics, ever."
Think of that every time I see it.

I once watched a b-bender tele slide off the back seat of my car onto the parking lot while in a gig bag...in slow motion big ding near the bottom strap button, but could have been worse. also had a thinline get run over by my drummer's mustang...but that's another story lol. stories to tell, and adds character to the guitar

I once left my guitar learning against a wall while I went to fetch a guitar stand that was like 10 feet away through a doorway. Down went the guitar, landed on the twin-strut steel legs of a drum stool, left two deep dents in the back of the neck. I swear, I nearly threw up.

That's become a loosely enforced policy around here, LTB. I was less careful when my life revolved around Teles. They're pretty tough. Gibson-style necks? Oooh.... I don't know about that! I agree. Fender’s are heartier than Gibsons for sure. I don’t always remember myself especially as the room got a little cluttered so even though having back issues I am working on cleaning up in there

My most recent one was my Gold Top too. First day I had it, it hit the metal corner of my Roland Jazz Chorus and dinged the finish down to the wood. Good times.

I bought my first nice acoustic in my 20's from a local shop. It wasn't long before I had a sizable ding on the bout. I took it back to the shop and asked the elderly owner if it could be repaired. He took the guitar from me, examined the scar, handed it back to me, and said, "Son, do baby it. Play it."
Ever since then, I've tried to protect my instruments, but if they receive experience marks, I just roll with it.

We've all done it. Admitting it in public is the first step to your recovery It's one of the reasons why, when I host jams (used to...hopefully more in the future) I recommend all attendees leave their guitar stands at home. I have seen cables tripped over and guitars and basses fall-down-go-boom. A few guitars have unfortunately gone home in various states of unintended disassembly. That ding has freed you to love the guitar for its inner self. I am sooooo stealing that.

I really like that way those shiny new PRS guitars look, with all that sheen in the finish.
But if you purchase a musical instrument, and if it was purchased to play and not as an investment or a wall decoration, it's gonna get dinged. I would never pay extra for a guitar just because it was relic'd. But if you are at all enthusiastic about music, there will be wear and tear. (And I'm not talking about Pete Townshend here.)
About 20 years ago I misplaced my Bible at church. I was without it for about a year and then it turned up. It was all worn out. I felt like such a heathen because I wasn't the one who wore it out.

In guitar world, the first ding is like being awarded a Guitar Purple Heart. It is a mark of honor deserving of greatest respect.

Plugged in guitar cords are like cats... they'll get in front of you and trip you every time they can and try to kill you (or your guitar)!

You're not the most dim-witted person in the world. I was tidying up some stuff and picked up my cased Telecaster without checking that the case latches were secure. They weren't and the guitar tumbled out onto the hardwood floor. Actually the floor got the worst of it. The tumbling-out-of-the-case thing screwed up sunburst Player's Strat--my favorite Strat ever. I had walked through a hospital floor, rode an elevator and walked through the lobby. I was preparing to slide it into the car when it tumbled out. Beside damaging the finish it flattened the ball end of the head stock, cracked the two tone sunburst body and knocked the neck out of alignment. For the past three years it has resided in my "closet of shame' at our Connecticut condo. Anyone got a method of fixing the flat spot on the head stock?
