Here's a pip from 1949 and it's a terrific, restored print. I first saw it in an "art" theater in about 1967:
Pretty sure Batman's mom made his costume by sewing a bat on his PJs.

The original Buster Crabbe Charles Middleton Flash Gordon from 1936 is a wonder. It's a classic example of looking at the future through the eyes of the present. It is very hard to imagine what will be when all we know, our only point of reference, is what is.

If you haven't already, you need to watch "Zombies of the Stratosphere", Rok. Features a very young Leonard Nimoy:

When I was a youngster, I used to watch those old cliff-hangers in the afternoon after coming home from school. One of the things I liked about Raiders of the Lost Ark was that it reminded me of those old serials from the '30s and '40s.
Those three Flash Gordon serials are the ones I remember the best. The one in JimmySee's post is the first of the three, with a totally bald Ming the Merciless. In the two subsequent serials, I don't know if that is slicked-down hair receding at the temples, or if it is a cap of some kind. I never could tell.

I actually knew Charles Quigley (hero "Gene" in the one linked below)’s grand daughter when I was a little kid. Herman Brix/Bruce Bennet ("Tiny") you may recognize from “Treasure of the Sierra Madre”. He also played Tarzan at one point. Charles Middleton (villain "39013/Henry Crowel") played “Ming the Merciless” in the Buster Crabbe “Flash Gordon” serials.
I think Republic Studios made the best serials. I read somewhere that a crew from one of the big studios, maybe MGM, was taking a break from shooting on location near where Republic was shooting a serial. The Republic guys were filming a stagecoach going over a cliff or something. They did a take and then started packing up their gear. One of the guys from MGM was incredulous and said, "hey...what about all the other takes?" The Republic guys said, "whaddya mean? We only do one take."

I always love how when they show a horizontal flying spaceship, the exhaust flame curves up!

Sorry, I thought this was gonna be about manatees. Well, we can segue to manatees if you like.
After all, I've seen threads here stray further than that from the original topic.
I can picture a masked, flying crime fighter in a manatee suit: "Manatee Man vs. The Nippon Dragon"...

indeed I do, I had never seen the original Batman until a few years ago. Story line might be cheesy but hey, I'm from Westconsin. Lately been DVR the Invaders from mid sixties, cheesy as well. My my how the image of the future has changed. I even like a good Perry Mason or the Saint. Where are the old Dick Tracy comics. Prune face? Wrist radios now cell phones.? A Harley-Davidson is still a slug. Somethings never change.
I miss a cable channel that could delve into the past.

Here's another good one by Republic and it's an excellent print, as well.
If somebody actually got into as many bare-knuckle fist fights (seems like at least one per episode) as the guys in these serials do, their hands would be completely busted up and crippled:

And here's another (also a great print) from 1943. Besides Rod Cameron, Duncan Renaldo appears as "Capt. Pierre LaSalle". Anyone who grew up watching 1950s TV shows as a kid will recognize him from his later role as "The Cisco Kid":

I tend to favor the Republic serials, bit this one from Columbia is pretty entertaining and the print available free on Amazon is high quality, especially for something shot 86 years ago: www.imdb.com/title/tt0025940/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#castBonus is an un-credited, "bit" appearance (his film debut) of a very young (23-year-old) Lee J. Cobb. As usual, the period clothing fashions and cars are killer. The "science" is appropriately fanciful and ridiculous.

Yes! I enjoyed, and still enjoy it. Ming the Merciless!
Of topic, but for Halloween, we are going to watch Abbot and Costello “Hold That Ghost”.
