I will add this ... If you have ever been an Owner/Operator of a small business you probably have a much clearer understanding of what is a fair price of things and services.

I use a credit card for everything, use cash when paying for used stuff from the owner. My credit card actually pays me for using it, it’s a Harley Davidson card from one of the major card companies, usually I have 200 to 400 bucks on it that I can use with a phone call. I spend it on the bike every year, buys me tires, occasional parts etc. I know it’s a low percentage, the card is paid off every month.
Cash works best for antiques, swap meets and places that the seller can pocket the money without the paper trail. Gives me a little more bargaining power.
We carry zero debt, we own three houses, we financed our first one, bought the the other two. When we first married we got into debt. Got it all straightened out in a reasonable amount of time, less than a year. We even have a pretty nice stash in an annuity, earning 4%. With out a university or collage degree and just a few years of higher education. I never really wanted to be in a position that the job came home with me. I was always happy as an hourly wage earner. Punch out at the end of the day and the time between then and punch in, was all mine. That is as important as the money.
When dad passed away in his early 50s mom gave each of us a bit of his life insurance, she freaked out when I bought the FXST in 1984, thinking I used this money. I kind of did. I put it into an interest earning account and used it as collateral for financing the Harley at a lower secured interest rate. I don’t really have a fiscal kind of mind but some stuff just seems logical.
I never had a career goal, never really thought about what I wanted to do, I wanted a job that paid well an left me alone when I wasn’t on the clock, weekends off, and enough of that to enjoy life, and not in a kitchen. I am scatter brained in my desires as a craftsman and obscure projects. Time to explore my natural talents and push the boundaries of my skills, paramount.
