I have a separate thread going but you may wish to try GHS pressurewounds. Those sound quite nice at least on the Jack Casady bass I bet they would sound great in your Gretsch.

I got the GHS Pressure wound .044-.106 strings Yesterday and put them on my Gretsch. At first, they were just ok, however I was able to lower the strings quite a bit (a lot actually ) and re-adjust the pickup heights; Truss adjustment plus very minor intonation . I did not think I would get the tones I am getting. Lows are Looooow but distinct, nice mids but not over powering. Smooth highs (surprising). After lowering the strings they are nice to play. Very little string noise (another surprise). Now I can get the low-end I want by plucking the strings just forward of the Bridge Pickup (very nice!!!!). And I cannot believe it but was able to get a very decent upright bass tone plucking just over the neck while playing along with a 60's song with upright in it. Ok I believe I am sold on these strings at least on my Gretsch Hollowbody Electric. I won't be changing my TI Jazz Flats on my Fender American Jazz. I might try them on my Fender P bass sometime. We'll have to see. If I turn the tone pot up I can get some growl out of the Neck Pickup. Normally not a person who likes growl but who knows it might grow on me before my time is up
