The Dumble thing pretty much goes over my head. People keep talking about beautiful cleans, but everything I've heard has loads overdrive—great overdrive, to be sure, but that's not where I start with an amp. YMMV. Anyway... this vid from Rhett Schull is worth a look if you have 17 minutes to spare.

Rhett does make interesting and useful vids. He's very generous with his experience.
The "Dumble thing" is achievable with just about any good single-channel tube amp and an overdrive pedal. Set the amp in its sweet spot (usually quite loud), where the amp plays cleanly when the guitar is picked and strummed gently, but starts to get gritty as you hit the strings harder. Then set your overdrive to unity and adjust the drive to bring in some sustain when you step on the switch.
But equipment alone will not get you there. That singing Robben Ford/Sonny Landreth thing is just as much technique as it is equipment. I cannot nail it all the time but I can sometimes get close. You have to have the amp up LOUD to the point the power tubes are compressing the signal.

What he said^. Plus as was noted in the video, each amp was built with a particular player in mind. Ry Cooder certainly is not in that high gain territory these other guys are,his soung is usually pretty clean IMO.
