I have an old Marshall 10” closed back speaker cab kicking around. It’s 16 ohms so isn’t real useful to me. I’d like to stick a 12” in it but wonder how it will react in a closed back cabinet.
What’s the the real difference/impact of open vs closed?

It has been my experience that closed back cabs are more beamy and usually have a tighter bottom end and generally sound a little more compressed. Others may have more scientific descriptions. I am a mere layman.
One of my favorite things to do is make a mini stack. I will put a 112 open backed combo on top of a 112 closed back extension cabinet. My main amp rig is exactly such an arrangement.

You may want to consider (or ask the speaker OEM) if the dimensions of your cab will work with which 12".

What model is this cab?
I ask because I’m not aware of a Marshall 1x10” closed back cab.

Micro stack perhaps?

Those aren’t closed back. They are vented it oval cutouts that also serve as handles. I’m not sure you could get a 12” speaker in one any ways.
C5 cabinet?

Years ago I had two custom cabs, 2x12 and 2x10, built using split-backs. When closed they produce a more focused sound with just a tad more bass. With the top half removed they are more musical to my ears. I guess more "open" or "airy" would describe it. Based on that experience I picked up a Marshall TSL 2x12 open back cab which I use for my '70 JMP 1987 small box head. The custom cabs were, and still are, occupied so the TSL cab fit the bill. I've got all the bases covered haha.
On the Fender side the '63 closed back cab for my '63 Tremolux helps to shore up the somewhat wimpy bass of the stock Oxford speakers.

Yes, the cabinet was the lower half of a Micro stack. Bought it for $50 from a pawn shop long ago, but didn’t know it had a 16 ohm speaker, so it’s just collected dust.
I thought it was a closed back but it does indeed have an oval opening that serves as a handle.
I ended up putting in my old 12” Jensen that was stock in my early 90’s Blues Deluxe. The opening for the 10” isn’t that much smaller and therefore the 12” fit just fine. Drilled some new holes in the plywood. Easy.
I wish I could report the results! My son stopped by right after I was finished and told me had just picked up some kind of modeling head unit and wanted to “borrow” my new set up! No report from him yet but I know he’ll put it through it’s paces.
Thanks so much for the comments!

I’m curious...
Which Celestion came out of the cab?

So it’s probably from the ‘80s or ‘90s. The later MG series used different speakers.

Sorry, son still has my cabinet! I’m guessing it’s about 14” square, maybe 8” deep?

I could measure. I have three of them here. 😂
Re: G10D-25
I have a bunch of them I’ve pulled. Probably my least favorite speaker that Marshall used back in the day. Too tinny to my ears.
The G10L-35, though, is an excellent speaker.

Hey e'budy. I'm playing low volume clean gigs. I have a mustang 2 v2 with a closed back. I'm toying with the idea of making it a semi open at the lower portion, maybe 6 inches from the bottom. right now the amp is a bit sterile and somewhat boxie. I'm hoping the mod will open up the overall sound. I like the amp for it's lightness and would like to make it improved over what it is. thanks. s:0)
