We don't, and I was surprised when James Carville and Mary Matalin got married; but two couples we know here have opposite political views, so maybe it's not as rare as I think?

Opposites attract, as they say...it could happen.
I once refused to date a girl because she liked my sports team’s main rivals, so you can’t go by me.

I don't think it was uncommon back in the day. I was snooping through Voterrecordsdotcom at some acquaintances back in Florida who hooked up late and saw a couple examples of blue/red relationships. I don't think its all that common anymore, particularly with younger folks.

I was once married to a woman who voted for the other team, and I used to joke that our votes would cancel each other out. I don't think it made a bit of difference during our marriage.
But we live in a different world these days, I recently went out with a very nice lady, and we had the same taste in music and bands, and she had a cool car and very attractive and all that...
Then I found her Twitter feed, and it was all just her retweeting a bunch of nasty anti-you-know-who crap, and it makes you think that maybe you should pass on this one.
My best friend votes for the other side, so we simply don't discuss it. We talk about music and guitars and it's just fine.

That's a valid point.
Sometimes I look at some of these skinny girls and I think man, she would starve me to death.

Now that Ronald McDonald and the Burger King are a couple, do they have different views on thread counts? Or just lip gloss?

I don't think it was uncommon back in the day. It would be far less common today, for reasons I would not even BEGIN to elaborate on.

Queenie's world of thought politically was with the other team when we met. She was not really very politically aware before we met, so her world of thought was not emphatic or rabid (so to speak).
After hanging around me for a while she began to see what I see and understood why it means something.
She is extremely politically aware now days and we do not disagree on much.

Because of the current political climate, without talking with one another, we both changed our party affiliations.

I would say, yes, it's less common for couples to have significantly different political views.
It's hard enough just deciding what couch to get or what color to paint the living room (the correct answer is, "whatever she wants.")
Having to capitulate on any strongly held political principle at a moment's notice without showing your insincerity (as that would cause an argument for which you would suffer) would be too much.
Now of course rarely you can have the "agree to disagree" type of arrangement but my experience that just means, "you'll pay for it later.."
Needless to say the wife and I are politically aligned. We have differing opinions on the minutia enough to make interesting conversation but have the same basic philosophy. We also have many friends on the opposite spectrum and socialize just fine.

Wanted to point out that you guys have done an excellent job of staying on point here, which was relationship based and not really political despite mentioning politics. The exact kind of stuff we permit here on MT2.

My brother in law and his wife are opposite sides. They're almost 70. But I will say that they're both centrists in their respective parties, pretty much a rarity with younger people.

Linda and I were political opposites, and we regularly agreed not to vote since we would cancel each other out. Of course, I would sneak out to vote anyways.
