I like him too. A great songwriter from Austin. Check out Choctaw Bingo on You tube.

Me too. My old band used to cover "Levelland," and I do it solo these days at the open mic. Great song.

Have several of his CDs and saw him play live once at a small venue. Some performers will mingle with the crowd, have a beer and make small talk between sets or after the show in a place like that: he's not one of them, or at least wasn't that night. Seemed like a pretty gruff curmudgeon, but he put on a great show and has written some terrific songs IMHO.
Here's one of my favs:
His dad, Larry, has written some great books as well ("Lonesome Dove", "Streets of Laredo", etc.).

Chiming on to Taildragger’s comment, I’ve interview him a couple of times about his career. I admittedly wasn’t a pro at the art of the interview, but it was difficult enough that it convinced me I was better off not meeting my heroes from that point on.

He's the real deal... a good enough songwriter to make up for how grumpy he can be. I play a few of his songs live, Too Long in the Wasteland, Where'd you hide the body?, Painting by numbers and my favorite Right here now... All great songs that just kinda suit my clothes and leave folks asking "who's that?". Haven't seen him in a while, but he tours small venues where you can get pretty close to him... just don't ask for his autograph.

For those of you unaware, James McMurtry's father is Larry McMurtry, the American novelist, essayist, bookseller, and screenwriter whose work is predominantly set in either the Old West or in contemporary Texas.
