It's hard enough to keep up with evolving revelations of a medical nature these days. It's even harder to stay abreast of Elon Musk's scattergun boasts. Today it's the "million-mile battery." Come on now. Did anyone think the "All Day Sucker" would actually last all day? Or that the "coldest beer in town," was actually colder than that of the next liquor store down the block? What Musk is touting, of course, is a battery that will retain its recharging capability for a million miles. Right now we're at around 1,000 charges or 150,000 miles. China claims a been-there-done-that victory in the million mile battery field, with one "ready to go," at their Amperex Technology LTD company. (Didn't they used to make dog food with the miracle ingredient of antifreeze?) I wonder if this will turn out to be another of those headlines that should end with a question mark rather than an exclamation point: Elvis Alive in Bermuda Triangle? Kardashians more intelligent than concrete blocks? Bicycle pump rivals Viagra? My ox is there to be gored, as I own stock in this. I think if there is a legitimate quantum leap in this technology his company will find a way.
There were skeptics that said you could never recover a rocket, land it vertically on a moving boat and reuse it, and they proved them wrong. Just saying.

I am not an engineer, though I've worked closely with engineers for much of my professional life.
Batteries are not like microprocessors, where speed seems to double and costs go down each generation. Limitations on batteries are physical and chemical.
So the great advance with batteries is likely to be how fast they can recharge -- not how long they last, necessarily.
So batteries for an electric car, like a Tesla, that have a range of, say, 300 miles, but can recharge in 10 minutes rather than two hours, would be a pretty significant improvement.

Not really generally an Elon Musk fan at all. Some cool aspects of SpaceX I like, and credit due there, but the fly-back boosters may now work, but they are more complex and take more weight and energy away to do this than perhaps simpler "glide-back" or even some "parachute back" systems. Just because somethings can be done, no matter how impressive, doesn't necessarily mean they should be done.
Not a fan of the cars, AT ALL.
Maybe Elon should change his name to Elon Mask and begin marketing some phenomenally "high-tech, battery powered" ........ well, gosh, I don't know ?
