So I try to log on to ADT because they thoughtfully sent a message that "our last test revealed we could not communicate with your alarm system."
Probably ought to take care of that, right?
Get the usual customer service runaround with the obligatory recordings of "Your safety is our concern!" "A representative will be with you shortly," "Hey, stupid, you know you can take care of this with our online chat, right?" (I did know that, but it wouldn't recognize my password to log on)
30 minutes later Jason comes on the line.
"Let's test your system"
He has me set my home alarm for "away".
"Okay, now that it's armed, move around and set it off. But let it continue sounding for SIXTY SECONDS!"
I set it off and begin watching the second hand on the clock with the alarm wailing.
At 50 seconds ... click, click ... buzzzzz "if you would like to make a call, hang up ...."(you know the one).
Back to the phone, where I receive more extended accolades for my patience .... Jason comes back. "Why did you hang up?" (teeth grinding... maintain cool ....)
We confirm that everything is now working perfectly (except customer service) and Jason reminds me that I can troubleshoot on their website.
I mention that ADT doesn't recognize my password.
Well, dang fiddle faddle ... you see, I am a Protection One customer. That company got absorbed by ADT. Sort of, says Jason. "We're still working out some issues." (Do ya think?) My payments go to ADT, but Protection One is who handles my service needs. Now, who wouldn't know that?
I go to the Protection One site as instructed. It won't recognize the password I've used for the last 20 years. Okay, I go with...."forgot password..."
The bot sends me a new password. All I need to do is confirm it, and type in my old password. Would you believe ... "sorry, we don't recognize your old password."
That's why I asked for a new one!
So I call the customer service number on the Protection One site.
"Hello, welcome to ADT. A customer service representative will be with you before hell freezes over ..."
I check reviews on ADT. Looks like it's harder to cancel ADT than to get aboard one of the Titanic's lifeboats.

ADT and every other alarm company are not there for your protection.
They are there to make a profit for their investors.

ADT Bear Trap Rescue Company:
"The snap of metal jaws on your tibia has alerted us via the ADT BTR app on your phone. Help will be dispatched once you tell us the name of your first pet and correctly use Facioauriculovertebral in a sentence."

I cancelled my alarm service contract ages ago. It was a holdover from when I bought the house. I wanted to cancel at that time, but the alarm company told me there was a contract in place and the cancellation fee was the amount owing on the contract. So I forked over my credit card info figuring I wouldn't renew when the policy came due, which I told the company when we spoke.
Well, renewal day arrived, I'd forgotten about it by then, and the company renewed my plan without telling me. When I finally twigged to the fact the company was charging my credit card without my permission, I blew a gasket. That's plain old robbery in my book. I couldn't believe a security company would be a common thief... which is what I told them when I called. That conversation and call to my credit card company sorted it out. I'm still steamed about it.

It's not just the alarm companies, either.
EXACT thing happened to me, this morning, with my health insurance company.
"We confirm that everything is now working perfectly (except customer service)"
I've decided that "customer no-service" is a better descriptor lol
FINALLY got someone at the insurance company and told him that he needed to talk with the hospital billing department, not me. I pay for a no deductible, ZERO out of pocket policy so, at this point, any problem was between him and the hospital. He called her and gave her a phone number to call where she waited for 15 minutes on hold until giving up.
Oh..almost forgot..THEN the insurance company had the audacity to ask me to stay on the line to participate in a customer satisfaction survey. Yeah ... like that was going to happen after having been on "ignore" (the next step down from "hold") for an hour.
Guess I'm going to have to hunt down the email address of the health insurance company's CEO. That usually gets some results.

I hear your pain and will raise it a notch. AT&T U-verse upgraded their security for email and couldn’t get email to work. To put it in short details I have called them 4 times. Each time for 1-2 hours, escalated to level 2 after talking to foreign agent barely understandable. Had me try many things, reset passwords for my 3 email accounts at least 9-10 times. Finally on last go round and over 2 hours I said I am tired and going to sleep. The apologized and now email app only works on main account other two have to log onto my Windows 10 PC and use 3 different browsers, one for each account. What a screwed up mess

Based on the thread title, I thought the topic was more a philosophical statement.

I hang sauce pot lids on the door hinges “o). A while back I heard an extremely aggressive banging on my front door, before I opened the door I leaned the shot gun against the wall up against my workbench, I’m glad I did, it was two officers with their squad cars in the front yard. My neighbors horse got loose and they asked me if they could coral the horse in my back field. I guess cops always bang the doors. Nice guys, they all are, I offered them water, they didn’t need any.
The drive way is a hundred or so yards with heavy growth , you don’t see the house until you turn the last bend around and ancient life oak. It’s a scary driveway, keeps most people away.
The neighbors are always looking out for everyone, never heard of a robbery but I do park the tractor and trailer where they can’t be seen from the road. My workshop can’t be seen from the road. There is a wild spot in the back that’s about 10 or so acres, a small spring is back there. I was showing a friend the property he wanted to see this wild area. I saw what I feared was a body surfacing close to the spring, thanks god it just turned out to be horse blanket.
The joke in this neighborhood is if someone is causing too much trouble, both Tim and Brad have a backhoe.

When I decided that it was time to join the home security game a while back, I did hours of research. My parents have been ADT customers for as long as I can remember, so they were an option. I decided to go with SimpliSafe and have been more than pleased with the customer service and products. If you decide ADT is no longer suiting your needs, I would highly recommend SimpliSafe.
*No, I am not a representative, nor do I play one on TV, and I do not receive any compensation, in any form, for recommending any products or services.

" If you decide ADT is no longer suiting your needs, I would highly recommend SimpliSafe." From the horror story reviews, I gather that ADT is well aware that many their customers want to jump ship, so they make it as complicated an ordeal as possible. Just to begin your Sisyphean task of bailing out, be aware that you cannot do so online. You MUST talk to an ADT rep. First is the obligatory waiting forever on hold. Next is the pin ball zinging from one representative to another, with each call transfer rolling the dice on whether you'll get a dial tone. Now comes "The Reveal": you have to pay 75 percent of what remains on your contract (24 or 36 months). Let's say your 36 month contract had just automatically rolled over. 75 percent at $50 bucks a month would be $1,350 (some pay less per month, some pay more). Once you're paid your ransom, there is still a good chance that "billing errors" will occur, with ADT haunting you like Marley's ghost at Christmas, for the foreseeable future. On the plus side, if ADT does actually catch a burglar inside your residence, the doors slam shut and he's not getting out until he signs a 36 month contract with ADT
