The Kansas Comet passes away at age 77. He was from my home town and starred at Omaha Central High. Track star as well.
When I was in high school we had two running backs whose father was one of Sayers best friends. Their Dad would sometimes watch our practices. One day I saw him standing next to guy watching us.
That guy ended up being Gale Sayers. After practice we all took a knee and he spoke with us. It was an awesome moment that I will never forget.

A KU great. He returned to Lawrence often and was active in various programs at the university. I saw him at a basketball game once.

Yes, Brian's Song. With a young James Caan as Brian Piccolo. It's a major tear-jerker.

I lived in the Chicago burbs when GS was playing so I saw him play often. Amazing talent, he WAS the Chicago Bears.

I remember when I was in college, I spent one weekend at Grandma's house. My uncle and I watched a Bears-Packers game. Sayers was in his second year, and he was hard to stop. Bears-Packers games in the 60s were very rough, compared to today. If they played today the way they did then, a lot of players would be "disqualified" (ejected), and maybe even incarcerated.
Their division used to be called "the black and blue division." That's probably why Sayers's career was not longer than it was.
