Once in awhile, I go to an acoustic jam to sit in. Plug directly into an open channel on powered mixer, but even with input gain jacked all the way and the channel level likewise, I can barely hear my guitar. After the last time, I went online to see if this was a known issue with the ES2 system. Turns out, it is. One of the solutions given on a Taylor board was to use a balanced cable with 1/4" TRS to an XLR out. Just tried this, and, wow, I was impressed. A/B'ing with standard 1/4 to 1/4" cable, the using the hybrid cable brought the guitar to life. Not only was volume noticeably higher, the clarity was enhanced as well.
I tried a direct box with 1/4" in to XLR out to see if what that did. Answer - nothing. No noticeable difference from direct from guitar signal. Put the 1/4 to XLR cable back, and, yep, there was the better signal.
So, if I go to this jam again, I hope they'll have an open XLR input for me!

That's a good tip...it could be the channel input you were using had only a "hi-Z" (two conductor) 1/4" input jack.
If the channel has switchable hi/low impedance on the 1/4" jack (many do, some don't), then a standard 1/4" to 1/4" TRS cable performs as well as a 1/4" to XLR.
I think--in order to prevent this from being a problem--Taylor shipped their guitars with a 10' 1/4" to XLR cable. I have an 814CE from 2006 and it came with one of these cables in the case's string box. I don't know if they still do this.

Peegoo, my Taylor is probably a 2010 model. Didn't include a balanced cable. BTW, the mixer I had issues with did not have switchable inputs AFAIK.
