I've been recording my wife (vocals and piano) a bit lately with my old Korg D8. I used the D8 just to record the tracks and sometimes add an effect, then transfer the audio to a computer for "mastering" in Adobe Audition. This method was getting old pretty quick so I figured a new recorder could help out. Just being able to pop an sd card into the computer to transfer files will be a big improvement. On the recording end, I've been running a condenser mic into a mixing board for Phantom Power and that was always any extra link in the chain that I'm hoping to eliminate. Ordered this Tascam unit today, should be here in a couple days. It seems to be well-reviewed, just wondered if anyone here had any opinions or suggestions.

I have one and I used it for three years running. I went from cassette in the 80s to hard disk recorders in the 90s, then to DAT, then to Pro Tools, and then back to a hardware unit (the Tascam). It worked really well sound quality-wise, but editing on that little screen was a hassle and managing signal routing was a pain. It had no phantom power, so I got an outboard two-channel mic power unit, and that worked fine. But I wanted simple.
About a year ago I tried Reaper and Audacity, and then Garage Band on my iPad and was blown away at how simple it is to use. I don't mess with plug-ins; I get all my effects from a desktop POD. It works really well, very little learning curve, and it sounds really good. Setting levels and managing signal routing is a breeze.
Yeah, it's not a "full-featured" DAW like Pro Tools, but I don't need that for what I do. I don't see me going back to a hardware recorder.

Got one two years ago, sad to say I've only done a few recordings on it. Have not yet sit down and ReadTheFrickingManual, so am only tapping a portion of its apparent potential. Just simple multitrack recordings, down to a stereo mix. Quality of sound, especially internal reverb, was EXCELLENT. (coming from a TEAC 4 track tape deck, and a 30 year old Akai DPS-16 DAW). And the ability to go back and forth to my PC via the SD card is a great advantage. My first recording (shared in dropbox): Instrumental Feel My LoveGood luck! (and RTFM) (incidentally, SOMEHOW it was listed as a $299 Stupid Deal of the Day at Musicians Friend website)
