There are too many to have a list of favorites. However, I gravitate to the earlier studio guys. Jamerson, Babbitt, Kaye, Osborne, Dunn, Sklar. I admired their versatility to make any song or style sound good. That is what I wanted to emulate. Maybe not be the most incredible, but be able to hold my own with almost any situation.

Yes, Babbitt. He was one I was trying to remember along with Kaye. Wasn't aware of Osborne, Dunn and Sklar being studio Musicians. That is cool to know. Thanks!

I gotta add Chuck Rainey. The week I spent with Victor Wooten and friends, had an indescribable effect on me, much of the stuff is still sinking in, and that was two years ago.

And Larry Williams Willie Weeks David Hungate, because Lowdown Bernard Edwards Nathan Watts/Stevie Wonder Ron Carter Stuart Zender/Jamiroquai Prakash John/Lou Reed Phil Chen/Jeff Beck Fernando Saunders George Porter jr./Meters David Hood/Muscle Shoals
Just a shot from the hip of a few I followed over the decades. More so since I started to play myself..
I've seen Jaco in ˋ76 with Weather Report. That was frightening..

Absolutely. Saw him play in 1980. So many great bass players, so little time (to steal from them all..) 😁

As an old jazzer I like Ray Brown... As far as new guys go I'm pretty clueless however I took my family to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers (at the TD garden in Boston)two years ago and Flea(?) the bassist was all-over-the-bass...
Man...he smoked...!

I like the old school. In my world less is more when being the bassman.
That said, there are lots of awesome bass players around, Kai Eckhardt and Jonas Hellborg among the many already mentioned.

Alot of great names here. I'll just add that I tend to listen to and try to emulate the great groove type players. Although the slappers and poppers are very impressive, they just don't do it for me like the more traditional players. I guess my screen name kinda gives that away.

I'd like to put in a word for Bill Wyman. He's not fancy, but he's wonderfully subtle and effective. When he plays with Charlie, the result is inscrutable and beautiful.

I have never really had a "favorite", but I have for years been aware of one particular player.
I have recently been watching some YouTube videos he has put out, even as recently as yesterday.
He is the guy that has probably played on more top songs than anyone imaginable.
A great many of the videos are just him talking life and about songs he contributed to and then playing his part right there live.
Jump to 5:20 to skip the dialog
Jump to about 2:40 on this one if you like.
