I've used the free app, Audacity, for years now. When I'm learning a new song, I'll record my guitar and vocal on a single track just to hear how I'm doing. I use the tempo change on an original recording to slow down the tricky bits. I've not learned how to properly do multi-tracking with it, but I have Logic for that.
I've found another handy effect - change pitch. When I'm learning an old song, sometimes the recording does not match standard tuning on my guitar. Speeding up the tape to raise the pitch of the vocals was fairly common back in the day, and I never mastered tuning the guitar to the recording. With the pitch change effect, it's easy to have the old recording play at standard pitch. I'm sure there are other apps that can do these things too, but Audacity works for me - and the price is right!

Many of us have used Audacity at some point. To do multi-tracking just add tracks.
Tracks>Add new>mono or stereo.

I've used Audacity for Pitch shift for years. The songs we play in church are often recorded in a different key than the written sheet music (never understood that, if composer=artist). Also my cover band (geezers) often changes key where it still sounds good) so I use Audacity to make several versions so the singers can ID which key works best. FYI you can Export the modified file to .mp3 (Audacity needs an external lame.exe I think - there are instructions for that in the Help). I often have several version .mp3 versions of the same song for practice depending on who will be singing that week. You can even pitch-shift by non-integer increments. Very helpful.
