I have a Traveler Escape Mk III plank mini acoustic with a Shadow piezo and preamp that is prone to making bright spiky noises when picking. Some years ago I tamed that type of problem with a thin undersaddle shim of polypropylene plastic.
Anyone have a better suggestion?

Do you mean the tone of the pickup is very bright and abrasive, or that there is some sort of "clink" happening? If there is something loose there could be something like a tapping happening on the pickup.
I'd check the saddle fit. A poor saddle fit would mean bad signal, which would mean turning volume up higher via the preamp which could make it kinda shrill and bright. Checking the saddle for flatness and lean would be my first step. Sometimes you can get an idea if it is really bad by pressing down on the saddle while it is plugged in and listen if you can hear the saddle shift back and forth. If the saddle is poorly fitted then there'll often be a chunking sound as it moves around.

Does it persist at all functions of the onboard pre-amp?

Thanks for responding guys. I can reduce it quite a bit buy reducing treble on the preamp or appropriately using the notch filters on my Acoustic Image Ten2.
Interestingly enough it is more prominent with reverb or echo.
