I bought a speaker on Ebay and the part of the gasket, about 1/4 of it detached from the surround..I'm guessing it was in questionable condition and exacerbated by UPS...
should I remove the whole gasket and start from scratch...or just re attach the damaged section..even though there is still a thin layer of it still present.
if I just ignore it and install it anyway is it really going to matter?...I know its hard to say but the pressure of securing it to the baffle should keep it from moving....
and is there one type of glue that is better than another

If you can mount it with the seal in place, fuggetaboutit. It’s not going any where.

that's pretty much what I figured...but this is the first time I've run into it...I got the speaker for cheap so I'm not complaining.....but that Peegoo part of me says it needs to be fixed!

installed it this morning..just made sure the gasket stayed in place when I put it on.......Rola speaker I'm guessing from an organ....ceramic magnet is huge...bigger than the Weber 50 watt that was in there....
tighter bass, more refined high's...and more headroom.....
best $25 I ever spent...!

but that Peegoo part of me says it needs to be fixed! You have a Peegoo part? You know what I'm famous for! Most speaker gaskets (rear-load type) are die cut from pressed card stock, which is a thick version of the stuff cereal boxes are made of. The gaskets are often composed of four sections that are glued in between the four screw locations. If a layer of part of the gasket is missing, that can cause the speaker basket to distort when it is snugged down to the rear of the baffle with the four screws. Some speakers have a really tight gap between the voice coil former and the magnet...and if the basket is distorted even a little bit, it distorts the cone and that pushes the voice coil off center. It can cause a rub (voice coil rubs against the magnet), which sounds like a buzzing or a fuzz tone. The really bad thing about a rub is it will abrade the voice coil and kill the speaker. You can easily make a section of gasket from a cereal/cracker box and glue it in place onto the existing damaged gasket to bring it up to the same thickness of the rest of the gasket. A very thin film of Elmer's works great for this. Removing an existing gasket is doable, but it must be done carefully because of how they're installed. On a bare speaker basket, the rim of the cone is glued in, and then the gasket is glued on over the rim of the cone. If you pull the gasket off, you risk ripping the cone because the paper gasket sticks to the paper cone better than the paper cone sticks to the metal basket. A goofy explanation, but I'm sure you get it.

A goofy explanation, but I'm sure you get it. A goofy explanation, but I'm sure you get it. not really goofy at all.......you nailed it bro... I got lucky...the gasket stayed together when I installed it and due to their being 8 mounting studs, it sealed pretty good..I had it amped up pretty loud yesterday, and it sounded great..... the original P15N, sounded ok but was a bit on the squishy side as you cranked it..then would compress....so in went the Weber 50w ceramic....huge difference....I saw the Rola and the starting bid was 25 bucks...so I said what the hell.......tighter bass than the Weber and smoother highs... me likey!

Geno’s explanation also makes the case for not over tightening the mounting screws to the point of distorting the speaker frame.
