not sure if this is the right forum for this...but here goes...
I have this one amp that I've fooled around with... speakers/tubes, to get the sound out of it that I'm looking for....but I just can't get it there....my stuff is in my garage...metal reinforced garage door, cinder block walls.....acoustically, not the ideal, but it's all I have.....no issues with my other 2 amps....
today I spent a good bit of time swapping tubes out..playing, listening...turn the amp off and change some of the tubes...this went on for about an hour...then I just gave up and told myself "You're not getting anywhere with this!...."
so its a rather nice evening here weather wise, so just for giggles I took the amp out into my lanai/pool area...plugged in and I was blown away by how much different it sounded...loud, crisp, smooth...no spongy bottom end or ice pick treble.....
it's made me wonder about all of the other amps, that I've bought and sold because I didn't like how they sounded...

Maybe Some carpet or large rug might help with absorbing the unwanted tones in the garage.

Maybe Some carpet or large rug might help with absorbing the unwanted tones in the garage. I've got so much stuff stacked along the walls, it wouldn't be worth the trouble....but I've certainly thought about.....
I was struck by how different this amp in particular responded when it could get some "air" as my other 2 amps sound fine....... it was so nice I stayed outside for awhile and plinked away!....I hope my neighbors enjoyed it...

If you are looking for something simple (and cheap) that might absorb "unwanted" tones or sounds; might I suggest "packing quilts". I did a "Community Theatre" show in a school auditorium, and I ran into similar problems involving the entire pit. You name it; problems with overtones, buzz, boom, out of balance. It was a sound engineer's nightmare.
Auditoriums are notorious for unwanted sounds bouncing off "hard surfaces", such as walls, floors, bleachers, the stage, etc. I was able to purchase a pack of a dozen packing quilts at a local store for a real decent price. We were able to place the quilts (strategically) around the pit, and it worked. I still pack the quilts in my van when I do a gig. Something as simple as placing a quilt over a nearby chair, or taping it to a wall is a big help. Best investment I ever made, especially good for drum & bass issues.

Harbor Freight is the place to go for packing quilts. They make great amp covers too.

My main live room is a heated shop (with the fancy roll up garageish doors so you can drive a truck in), carpeted with some indoor/outdoor industrial stuff. Walls are drywall, with high ceiling.
No reflection issues because of that thankfully. The cinderblock outbuilding, well, it is icepick central and I do love it for Bass VI recording, but that's about it. It reminds me of the acoustics of doing live sounds for friends bands at a converted roller rink in the 80s, honestly. I would not want it to be my exclusive space.
For those types of rooms, though, past some acoustic treatment, directionality is your friend - amp stands for the combo or cab can dn will help significantly IME.

Agree. Hardwood floors on joists with rugs and bass traps is where it's at. My blues deluxe sits in my home studio which is a carpeted 10x12 room upstairs near the attic. Way too much for the room, even with acoustic treatment. A little black amp box (power attenuator) helped a ton but the amp still feels like it breaths way more when I move it downstairs (hardwood, rugs). Don't do that very often though

I'll post what info I have on the topic ... which is not a lot and not very scientific. Sound Chart sent to me by member Mick Reid. roomacoustics2i by Larry Madsen, on Flickr My room with simple curtains from Lowe's home decor section. No windows, just *sound treatment* curtains. DSC_0993 by Larry Madsen, on Flickr Carpeted panels up high I made from left over carpet and 2X2s DSC_1002 by Larry Madsen, on Flickr The room as it exists. DSC_1105 by Larry Madsen, on Flickr I have had several seasoned musicians in the room and they find the room very acoustically pleasing for it's intended purpose. In my thought process I included the chart info noting that hard surfaces absorb low frequencies the best. My room also has a vaulted ceiling which I understand is helpful in defecting sound in more desirable ways than a perfect cube or rectangle.

Rob: I have to agree with you; the raised "stage" is larger and more efficient than any place I've been, or ever seen. As a matter of fact; that set up is better then any recording studio I know of. My hat is off to you Larry, the concept and workmanship is magnificent.
