I've been into Swamp Ash, lately, after selling a couple of guitars, earlier this year, with similar finishing technique.
This first one is a lightweight (3 lbs. 1 oz.) solid Swamp Ash body from Guitar Mill. I don't grain-fill these. Just dye, shellac and clear gloss nitro.
I dyed this one red, then sanded back so that the red was only left in the porous grain. Then I worked the body with lemon yellow and vintage amber. I sand throughout the whole process to get the desired look on the body. Often it's about knowing when to stop (sanding).
And the nearly-finished guitar:

The next one in the queue is a Thinline Strat.
I was struggling to find the appropriate PG for this one. I ended up ordering a birch PG so I can dye it myself.
These have been a lot of fun because it's never clear until the end how they're going to look.

Very nicely done, Leftee. The orange pg with the black pups, knobs and gold hardware pops. will the neck get the amber/yellow treatment?

Thanks!
The neck is flame maple and got a light golden brown tint.

You're getting really nice results with that technique.

Tanks!
It’s fun because I never quite know how they will turn out - even while they are in-work. And sometimes it’s a bit of a wrassling match once I’m into it. I have an idea of where it’s heading, but the wood seems smarter than me.
Which is totally plausible. 🤔

Real interesting stuff. Almost has an animated look.

I never thought of it that way... but yeah.
Cartoonish. 😂
This sort of stuff has been selling, for me. That said, the Thinline is all mine. The other be will get listed as soon as I finish it.

And I don't mean that in a bad way.

Almost has an animated look. You might have something there! The younger generations that seem to like these grew up with anime.

When sanding back after the dye was it very difficult getting the look even? I'm screwing around with an ash body using antique white varathane (what?!?) which gives a nice approximation of Mary Kay white, but boy is it tedious trying to make it look even. I'm thinking of buying some potassium permanganate and just doing a relic job on the whole thing.

Well, I wasn’t going for even. Not sure what you mean.

I'm talking about a balance between sanding back too much (like edges) and not enough.

I don’t worry about edges because they get their final color last. In fact, sometimes I go back a and sand beck the edges just so I can apply color. See the Sugar pine express thread.

The good thing about dye is that I can touch it up if I over-sand.

This one is done. It might be the nicest, best sounding/playing Strats I've built. The pickups are SD SSL-2s. I will be using more of those in the future.
6lbs. 13oz.

Thanks!
I stained the neck a light golden brown to bring out the flame a little. Really pleased with how it worked out.
