Just curious. My 1st car was a 56 chevy. Got it for $50, all it needed was a timing gear. $12 I think, and couple hours. Wish I had it now.

I joined the USAF in Dec 1960 and stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany (1961). I was an Airman 2nd Class (E2) at the time, pay scale $85.20 per month. First car was a 1949 two window VW. Paid $150.00 for it (I had saved up some money).
Sure wish I had that car now.

1965 Ford Galaxie 500. It was a sort of birthday gift from my grandmother. She gave me $100 to buy a car, and I think I had another $100 saved up.

The first car I purchased was in '63, a '58 348 ci Chevy Belair coupe during my senior year of high school. I spent half of my senior year playing six nights each week (and a Sunday matinee) in a lounge act where I was making really good money that allowed me to buy just about any car I wanted. Here's a grainy photo of it. Attachments:

1957 Ford Fairlane (in 1966). Got it for $100. Its transmission was a bit tired; in the morning I would leave my apartment in plenty of time, because I knew that once I shifted into reverse, it would take several minutes before the request for that gear would be honored.

A 1965 Corvair Corsa convertible. Pale yellow (I had it painted) with a black top and interior.
The Corsa was only available in 1965-66. They all had 140 hp, 4 1bbl carbs, dual exhausts and a 4-speed. The convertible was very rare. Super fun to drive, unstoppable in the snow.
I sold it while living in Omaha. Years later I saw it in Arvada, CO. It looked good, somebody was taking good care of it.

1973 Triumph Spitfire. It's in my garage! I've bought it three times and sold it twice! I've had it stripped down to the frame twice, I think I may have touched every nut and bolt on it. Great car!

Great car! I owned 2 or 3 of those, one of them twice. My first car was a '50 Chevy I got for mowing the junkyard owner's lawn every week for a month. Second car was a '55 Pontiac Chieftain 2 door hardtop. The first car I actually registered was a '57 VW. It lasted all of 40 minutes on the road. The tie rods were shot, causing the thing to wildly oversteer in a mild curve in the road, rolling and skidding to a stop on its roof.

1978 Chevy Malibu. Bought it for $500 from a neighbor. A quintessential old lady car...Straight 6 engine, AM radio, only options were the plastic Jesus and compass mounted to the dashboard. Had 67,000 miles when I bought it. By the time I got rid of it 3 years later it had 198,000 miles.
A buddy of mine once commented that it was the most boring design ever. He thought it looked like a group of 4 year olds sharing a box of crayons were commissioned by GM to design a vehicle. Pretty much.

My first car was purchased in 1967. It was a 1958 Chevy Impala. Two toned; Salmon and White, 8 cylinder. Did not last very long until i blew the transmission out and could not afford to repair it, so I sold it. The next car which I did have for years was a 1964 Buick Skylark convertible with a V8; engine that had aluminum heads, four barrel carburetor; Borg Warner T10 Transmission and Hurst Linkage. That was the beginning of my love of "Muscle Cars".

1969 Dodge Dart, 3rd hand. Like budg's Plymouth, it had a slant 6. Mine was a ‘72 Plymouth Valiant. Basically same car as the Dart, with the same slant 6. Ugly as sin, but you could see all four corners of that car with just the mirrors, and that engine could survive pretty much anything.

1971 Chrysler Newport, bought in 1978 for $300 with 122k on it.
There was a big hole in the dash where heating vents used to be and the heat just blew straight out of the hole!

Just like Plaidsabbath's 78 Malibu... My first was a 78 Ford Fairmont. 200 Straight 6. Couldn't kill that motor. Built like a box but because it shares a lot of "Fox body" Mustang stuff, it now has a huge following in the performance market. I've seen Fairmonts go for as much and sometimes more than real muscle cars in good condition. Car in pic is not mine. Attachments:

First car I drove was a 1967 Rover 2000 TC, belonged to my dad but he had long since retired it so he let me drive it, a really cool car. Then a 1970 Buick LeSabre also a mom & dad hand me down, had a hole rusted in the floor right were you heel would rest, got many a wet foot driving in the rain. First car I bought on my own was a 1977 Buick Skyhawk, drove the wheels off of it. Rover 2000 TC

'39 Chevrolet Pickup Truck. $400. The gas tank was under the front seat and the front seat wasn't really bolted down. Eventually, part of the seat punctured the top of the gas tank. It was always eating front wheel bearings. The brakes worked sometimes. I got it 6 months before I joined the USAF and ended up driving it from Sonoma Ca to Plattsburgh NY with a U-Haul trailer.

1965 (IIRC) MG 1100 Sedan, bought in 1973 for about $500. It was a fun little thing. It handled like a sports car. However, I was going to college out of state and this car was not built for interstate use. First trip from Ohio to Texas resulted in the engine using 1qt of oil every 300 miles. I put a tach on it and at 70mph, the tach read 6500 rpm. Ouch! It didn't make it all the way back to Ohio and Dad had come and tow me from Knoxville to Cincinnati. He rebuilt it and after the next Ohio to Texas trip (even at slower speeds), the result was 1 qt of oil every 300 miles. The thing would just glaze over the cylinders and piston rings. I would find the cheapest oil I could find and buy it by the case.

I shared a gold 1967 Belvedere with my older sis. A slant 6, three on the tree 4 door.
Looked like this:
Absolutely nothing cool about it except I was only 14, and could stuff 6 to 10 of my friends in it.

My first was a 1939 Chevy Master Deluxe 4-door sedan (bought in 1962). Black w/gray-brown interior, running boards, suicide rear doors, no heater, no radio, optional vacuum-assist column shift, town/country horns, and a push pedal on the hump to engage the starter.
My friends all wanted to ride on the running boards like the guys on the Untouchables TV show. I named the car the "E. Ness Express", painted on the fender behind the front wheels. Lots of memories of going hunting, fishing, and cruising for chicks (sometimes successfully :^) ). I loved that car!
