Some of you are lucky to have been the right age to get the muscle cars of the 60's.
My first car was a '77 Toyota Celica GT that I bought in summer of '83. I drove my parent's '74 celica ST in high school. I developed a fondness for the smaller, sportier manual tranny cars during that time.
I've always wanted, but never owned, a true muscle car. I had a '66 Skylark convertible that used to belong to my grandmother, but it was the 225 ci V6.
Now my "fun car" is the '01 BMW Z3 3.0 that my dad bought new. It's got pretty good get up and go at 225hp and, at only 6500 miles, it's like new.

I was in the 11th grade in 1977 and I needed a car to get to and from my new after-school job, so I took six crisp Ben Franklins of my own money and answered the for-sale ad in the newspaper for the car. Six hundred dollars was a TON of cash to me back then. It was a 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu 350 in ridiculously good shape, and was a wonderful car the entire time I owned it. Having this two-door sporty car years ago is the reason I now drive a Challenger. Life is short!

'86 VW Golf w 254k miles and a blown headgasket, bought with $1 from my uncle in 2001 when I was 16. Was riding a street bike at the time but needed a car.
Fixed the HG for $100, drove it for a year and a half until I turned 18, got a real job waiting tables, and bought my first BMW, an '88 325i, which I drove throughout college.

1959 VW bus...a real POS, but I was 16 with dreams (1970?). Had a '57 engine in it producing a whopping 37HP (when new)... probably about 20 when I had it... After months of me working on it to get it on the road and inspected, was able to take it to Washington Music, about a 70-80 mile round trip. Got it up to 55 going downhill on the Capital Beltway. Had another '63 and a '66 camper next by 17-19... some great memories.

My next door neighbor and I bought a pair of basket case Fiat 600D's when we were about 15. I think they were $25 the pair and we had to push them down the street from the kid we bought them from. Our plan was to make one running car and share it. They were parked side by side in my garage for a good year before my mom told us to get rid of them. We had no idea what we were doing and I don't remember how we got rid of them but one didn't mess with Mom.
My first running car was a '63 Beatle that I bought when I graduated high school in '68 with money my Jewish grandmother saved to give me. That I bought a German car horrified her. I never did buy another German car even though I've always loved Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and even other VW's.

1987 Mercury Cougar. I loved that car. Not only my first car, but I was also the first of my friends to have one. We hauled guitars and amps in it, picked up ladies in it, I had travel board games in the back seat pockets, extra umbrellas, etc. Upgraded to a CD player when most card were still sporting tape decks.
Day one of ownership we drove straight to Six Flags with it (despite my parents telling me to stay on the Island because I’m a rebel like that).
It lasted three years until I was struck in the rear by a chain of cars, the one behind me getting completely wedged under mine. It was of course totaled.
Never had another car I liked as much.

Bone-stock, 1931 Ford two-door sedan in 1964 for $209. Cracked cylinder head (bought a resurfaced one for $15 and torqued her on). Dented front fender which I had bumped, primed, painted and installed by a body shop for $25. Was missing two "knee-action" shock absorbers and an inside door handle but, other than that: pretty cherry. They cost "a bit" more than that in that condition nowadays. A very basic car which was a great platform for a 15-1/2-year-old me to use to learn the fundamentals of auto mechanics.

'84 Pontiac 1000, the Pontiac version of the Chevette. Horrible, terrible car, perfect example of everything wrong with GM back in the 70's and 80's.
Even so, I was thrilled to have it.

<-------------- This one. (One in the pic isn't mine, but the same color and trim.)
'67 Impala. Mine had the 283 V-8, manual steering and brakes, 2-speed Powerglide tranny. Yer basic Chevy, but I loved it. Drove it for about 4 years, finally sold it when it was burning more oil than gas (and it burned a LOT of gas!).

Mine was a red '61 VW Beetle that I bought used in 1965 for $700.
It had 30,000 miles on it when I bought it. I drove it my last three years of college and totaled up 68,000 miles. Sold it for $795.
Probably the best car I've ever owned. Nothing ever broke on the car. Would love to have it back today, restore it, and use it as my daily driver.

My first car was, also, a 1956 Chevy. This is the only photo I have (taken when I was about 50 years younger and about 50 pounds lighter). I remember my dad telling me not to use detergent oil in it because he figured the only thing holding the engine together was carbon deposits lol

I drove back roads in California in my '63 but was also fine parking it at the tennis club we used to have a gig at. I saw them everywhere in SoCal back in the day.

I'm not sure what counts as a first car. I started driving race cars at age 14. The first street legal car I had was a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. It was warmed over with better suspension and engine. Had a SCCA legal cage and was raced.
My first non race car was a 1970 road runner with a 440 and 4 speed. I loved Mopar till they started the cylinder deactivation crap.
Today I like a Coyote or Voodoo powered Ford thank you

In 1971, and not being very well off financially speaking at that time, my parents scraped together enough to buy me a very used 64' Rambler American convertible. It was in pretty rough shape but it got me to college and back for about a year before the engine died.

65 Chevy Van. Didn't know it was a 3 speed manual till I got in it to bring it home. Kinda bought sight unseen. Drove it all over the Midwest and Colorado. It had the engine right between the seats (doghouse). My black lab could sit on that thing and never fall off. Good times......sigh....

1966 Dodge Dart my parents bought new for $2100 and given to my older brother and I in 1968 when at age 16 I got my drivers license. Nothing special except to me. A lot of memories in the car. Wish I still had it. Ivory yellow 225ci slant six. Those were a work horse. I would have loved to have a VW Beetle or that 1931 Ford at that age. like this one without the wheels
