I retired 13 yrs ago from my day-job. I wanted to devote more time to my music but it wasn't till I moved to Florida 7 yrs ago that I began my music "career." I played open mics for awhile and realized how many talented people there were around me. When I got into some working bands, I really stepped up the woodshedding and practice, both with my guitar playing and singing. Eventually, I got my own group together and was playing regularly at the Legion/Elks/Eagles type venues where the older audiences appreciated my 50's-70's music.
Then COVID shut things down with bars being ordered to close. When they opened up again at the end of last year, I elected not to go back and take chances with my health or that of my band members while the virus is still raging. I'm still sitting it out, waiting for the vaccine.
By the time I feel safe, it may be too late for me, a 72 yr old geezer of modest talents. I've retired from open mics as I feel self-conscious about being 20 years older than everybody else. I'm seeing younger guys (kids in their 50's) taking those service club gigs. I may find that I've aged out of the market. If that's the case, I'll keep jamming with my buddies as long as I can. We still get together weekly, but it's not the same without the motivation of upcoming gigs.

I pretty much wrapped up my gigging days in my early 40's after a couple decades of heavy weekend warrioring. I had then found a group of guys really close to my house (one I already knew for some time) where jamming became bowling night out. 2 days a week from 7pm to 9pm. I had a riot and no ambition to take it any farther. We played whatever we wanted and the bonus was we were all like-minded people in non-musical matters so between song conversations were also enjoyable. Someone then got the "hey, we should get some gigs" notion and that little social quickly turned to the usual; tweak set lists, find a few gigs, fizzle. The sad part about it all is the other guitarist, who I consider a *great* musician had told me recently that he hasn't even picked up his guitar in months and was thinking of selling off most of gear. Up until this crud he was gigging with 2 different bands. If he does wrap it up it'll be a sad ending for such a talented guy, somewhat younger than most of us (mid-late 50's).
