I have been writing a new song. I started with the lyrics. I wrote them a couple months ago. It took me awhile but I came up with a melody and chords for it that I'm happy with. I want it to be a fingerpicking steel string acoustic song. That's all fine and dandy until I start working on it. I have no problem with the fingerpicking or chords part of it. There's nothing above the 5th fret and most of it is within the first 3. I can play it flawlessly on my classical with the big wide neck. When playing my Guild the fret buzzes and string mutes are driving me crazy. My banana sized fingers just don't fit between the strings when I want to have open ones ringing in tight quarters. I need a steel string with a neck at least a good 1/8 inch wider at the nut. If I use a capo and move up the neck the problem isn't as exaggerated since the neck is wider.
I measured the tip of my index finger from the nail side to the pad and it's a little over 1/2 inch thick. If I go up it a little, like would happen when applying pressure to fret a string, it's thicker than that. The other fingers, except for my pinky, are considerably thicker than that. I can make it work sometimes but there is absolutely no room for any kind of misalignment on the string. That's almost impossible for me to accomplish no more than I play acoustic guitar.
I have the same problem on electric guitar but the strings are lighter and I can usually find ways to execute things that don't require notes played on 2 different strings, on the same fret, with an open string, or strings, ringing between them down close to the nut.
I suppose that I just need to practice on the acoustic more but it really bugs me when I can do the deed on the classical and not the steel string.
Any ideas on a quality acoustic with a wide fingerboard at the nut? My Guild D40 measures 1.700 inches from outside to outside of the nut. A short scale length isn't a problem for me and I actually prefer that.
