A few days ago I had some free time and felt like doing something musical. I didn't have anything particular that I was working on at the moment and tried to do something I hadn't done before; write a song with no other inspiration than the goal of writing a song in a specific genre and getting it to the demo stage as quickly and efficiently as possible, without obsessing about the idea of individualism or other such things. Usually my songwriting is a somewhat arduous process that begins with a moment of creativity then follows a long, drawn-out road of frustrating tracking/production mistakes guided by the idea of "being true to the meaning of the song" and by the end becomes a bit tasking. So I tried to not think about it as much..
I chose Motown as a genre since I like the music and have never written anything similar.
The song came together fairly painlessly and the whole process was actually quite fun, probably because I'm finally getting familiar with the new DAW so minimal technical challenges. The most fun was tracking the bass part (which is a cello played pizzicato since i don't have a bass). Anyway it was pretty fun just writing a part, tracking a part, writing a part, tracking a part etc, minimal takes, mix-mix-mix -> ozone = done, without worrying too much about being overly original.
Next steps from a production standpoint would be a 4-part harmony during the minor bridge and maybe some strings, although both sound like a lot of work and i'm worried the timbre of one voice and one stringed instrument (cello) playing all 4 parts will sound a bit janky, also a lot of work so may not happen. also I'll probably casually improv over the track on the strat for a while and make the electric guitar part better. Cheers.
