I was checking out Fender customer shop strats and was surprised to see that they still had a ton of relics on there. I thought that fad was already passed?! I have a relic Tele, but I made it myself by playing it for about 10 years and abusing it on stage.

Never were a thing for me. I'm pretty fastidious about my gear.

I am guessing so.
I bought a 60th Anniversary Jazz Bass in Firemist Silver about 2 months ago. The relic was the least appealing part about it to me (no, this is a not a negative criticism about that. I was more interested in the firemist silver and the stack knobs. I would have bought it with or without the relic).

I’ve owned my relics since I’ve purchased them when new 50+ years ago.

5 years ago I bought my first custom shop strat. At the time I was looking at 50s era specs with a 9.5 “ radius and 6105 frets in either surf green or daphne blue. Found a journeyman relic 59 ri in daphne blue that has been an awesome guitar . From 6 feet away you wouldn’t know it was a relic. Evidently they are pretty popular still as they sell a lot of them.

Maybe they'll become "THE" thing now that them young whipper snappers can't play in smoked filled bars for 30 years by golly.

Yeah, they're still a thing. Lightly reliced seems more popular than the heavily reliced stuff. They're getting better (that is, more convincing) and have their audience. I definitely don't hear much main stream talk about it like I used to, though.

They never were a "thing" in my world. Pretentious BS.

Lightly reliced seems more popular than the heavily reliced stuff. It is for me. While I am not big on the relic thing, I think the job done on my 60th anniversary J was tastefully done.

My best buddy bought a Custom Shop Strat relic a couple weeks ago.
It was not cheap, and man is it nice.
I'd say they're still a thing.

I don't get it......if you want a guitar that looks used....buy a used guitar. I have personally relicked every guitar I have owned.

I dunno, I've known a lot of musicians over the years. They do kooky things with their guitars, their hair, bodies, clothes, their lives. It's what they do. Viva la différence, ya know?

Yeah, they are a thing here on my planet. They are insanely expensive for what they are. I have two Fender CS light relics, both from the Time Machine series, and they are amazing guitars. The Strat was a gift, and the Tele I found at Mars Music in 2003 for $600. It was mismarked and they let me have it at that price. Cha-ching! If you don't like 'em, that's fine. If my owning a pair of 'em lowers anyone's opinion of me--well, that's their problem, not mine I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Totally a matter of personal preference: like maple or rosewood.
Some likes 'em some don't.
Not better or worse: just different.

I wouldn't seek one out, but if I saw one that had the "it" factor, it wouldn't stop me from buying it either.
I've got a number of guitars dating back to the mid-80's (geez, that's 35 years ago now). They now have a ton of fret wear. At least one is overdue for a refret, but I'm scared to have it done. All my guitars look practically new, even the ones with a lot of playing time and the ones I gigged with when I was in a band for 10 years. Most have an odd ding or so if you look really closely, but I take really good care of my guitars.

I have to laugh because I still have the '79 Les Paul that I bought when I was a teenager... and while it is close to being worn out, it just doesn't look like a relic.
The finish is about gone on the back of the neck, the frets are pretty flat, and it's been hit by a cymbal or something... But it doesn't have that "dragged behind the tour bus" look of a relic.
I will say this though, whenever I play an electric guitar the first thing I do is turn the volume down, and the CS relic that my buddy bought just rings out.

At least one is overdue for a refret, but I'm scared to have it done. May I ask what the concern is? I would think if it is just finding someone, I am confident that someone is out there that can do it. If it is the possibility of a botched job that is unsettling, I understand that.

I will say this though, whenever I play an electric guitar the first thing I do is turn the volume down, and the CS relic that my buddy bought just rings out. Yeah, that's the funny part to me. The relics are getting better so there is a grey area between realistic looking relics and old guitars that are gently played where they could be confused. I see a lot of old/vintage guitars, and it is funny to me what some people think makes a guitar look old. A week or two ago I had an early 60s Strat in for a refret, and a coworker had on his bench a partscaster that was reliced. It was funny to put them next to each other, because a lot of relic enthusiasts might have picked the new guitar as the vintage piece, and the vintage one as a newer guitar.
The more gentle ones are usually not much more reliced than just dulling the finish and keeping it from being like the brand new white sneakers on the playground.

I personally wouldn't want to get a guitar with neck binding, like a Gibson, refretted.

I've heard some horror stories of botched jobs. Also, I've heard you can only refret a few times (kinda like hip replacement revision). If that's true, I'd like to stretch it out. One has the best feel and resonance I've ever played. It's one of those guitars that people pick up and involuntarily go "oh wow".

You’ll be glad you did.

Yeah, they’re a thing like young women buying new jeans pre-ripped😂😂😂😂😂 I rib my 31 year old daughter about them. I don’t get relic’d new guitars but to each their own. I have to wonder if they want to come across as appearing to own an actual natural worn 50 year old guitar.

You just have to play one.
If every guitar that Fender made was as good as the Custom Shop, they would rule the world.

they are a thing and so is vanilla coke
but if a guitar plays great and sounds fantastic and you like it
it doesn't matter if its relic, NOS, journeyman or whatever they call the finish options now
a good guitar is a good guitar.
Period . . . . . . .Mic drop..................................
