The latest trends in ukes seems to be making them look like Brazilian Cavaquinhos. Cavacos are super charged ukes derived from the Portuguese Machete and Portuguese Cavaquinho. Larger, deeper body and steel strung. Tuned Low to High DGBD one octave higher than guitar. Alternate tuning is DGBE. Used in Samba, Choro , Foro and other Brazilian styles of music. The Cavaquinho is to Brazil as the Ukulele is to Hawaii, and both introduced by the Portuguese.
Currently working on one with highly figured maple backs and sides with rear wedge center strip of EI and EI binding. Head stock faced in holly and EI and back strapped in EI. Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Bone nut and saddle. Top is Port Orford Cedar with quasi Bouchet bracing. Slot head stock with Butter Bean tuners. Everything done and ready to glue the top bracing, fit the top then cut the binding rabbet, fit the binding, attach the neck, install frets, glue the bridge, and finish. ETA May.
Any one else building ukes or similar ?
