Do you guys like this film? It plays all day on Christmas on certain stations. Personally, I really enjoy it. Although it shows life a little before my time, it's close enough where I still remember feeling (and thinking) that way when I was a kid.
My wife says she hates it - she can't relate to wanting a bb gun. I don't recall ever lusting for a bb gun, either...but I still get the feel being conveyed. Maybe it's more of a guy move? I don't know.

I think that movie is great! It captures a lot of my childhood even though the era is bit older.

I do love the movie; I think it's because it does a really great job of showing extreme characters in common situations, and it mixes reality with fantasy from the perspective of a little kid in an exceptionally good way. It has definitely grown on me over the years. Yeah, I lusted after a BB rifle. A few years back a pal of mine at work, when we were discussing this film, was lamenting the fact that he never had a BB gun as a kid. I told him every kid needs a BB gun. He said he missed the opportunity. The last day before Christmas break we walked out to the parking lot to leave work and I told him to follow me to my truck. I presented him with a long narrow box (in it was a Daisy lever-action BB rifle with a compass in the stock). He cried like a little girl on Christmas morning. The times are different now, however.

I was never even aware of the movie until a few years ago. I was stationed in England when the movie was released so I totally missed it.
I don’t watch it every year, but I probably should. I do like it a lot.

The times sure are different. My parents wouldn't let me get a BB gun because we lived in the city, although there was a nice field and small woods behind us. I did have a slingshot.

We watch it every year, and can quote it word for word.

Christmas morning I texted all my nieces and nephews on my side of the family. I remembered that one of them watched A Christmas Story every Christmas. We went back and forth with hilarious quotes from the movie. He reminded me of the dad putting the ducks head in his pocket, and I texted back with "It's still smiling." Actually, the line was "It's smiling at me." Then THWACK!
My nephew also told me that he tried to get his wife to order him a leg lamp from Amazon, but she vetoed the idea.
I didn't watch it this year. Did the leave in the cancel-worthy parts?

I don’t watch it yearly and I watch a ton of Christmas movies. I think it’s just ok.

We never miss it and never grow tired of watching it. I’ll bet most of you have a leg lamp displayed in your man caves this time of year.
I was forbidden from owning a BB gun as a kid. My mother didn’t want me to shoot my eye out and my father didn’t want me indiscriminately killing tweety birds. It didn’t bother me much because I received a 22LR single shot rifle at age twelve and a 12 gauge scattergun at age 14.

Love it. We had the BB gun drama with my brother but the part of the movie that gets me every time is when the mother bundles up his little brother in so many layers against the cold that he is incapable of any body movement. Poor little guy falls over in a snow bank and is stiff as a board and can’t get himself up. Laugh like crazy st that: my mom would do that for us with sweaters and snow suits and plastic bags on our feet held up with rubber bands as the last layer of waterproofing before our boots were crammed on. LOL memory. Also the getting the tongue stuck on the frozen pole!

Last year my oldest son got me the major award lamp for Christmas. He and his brother built the wooden crate it was gifted in complete with packing material. I just put it back away for another year.

I love it . It’s hard to believe it’s the same person who did Porkys! Some of it was shot in and around Cleveland. They made a museum at the house they used for filming. It’s actually really nice.

Darren McGavin is great in his role. Agreed. Having seen him in Alfred HitchChicken Presents as a younger man, I think he was an excellent actor in general.

A relative of mine grew up in the house in Cleveland they shot it at, so I have to watch every year.

I grew up in N. Ohio, just west of Cleveland. The whole movie just exudes that area.
I remember Higbee’s too.

Oh, we had BB guns when we were kids. Every kid in town had one. I only knew one person who was shot in the face with a BB. It just missed his eye. The younger brother of the girl who did the shooting, shot my brother in the back with a BB gun, but it did no harm because of the distance and the layer of clothing my brother was wearing.
Another sister in this shooting family grew up and married a guy whose lower leg had been shot off in a hunting accident. I forgot who pulled the shotgun's trigger, but I don't think it was a shooting family member.

I remember seeing it at the theatre when it first came out. I didn't know it had been filmed locally, but the woman I saw it with worked downtown and was aware of it.

I remember as a 12 year old listening to WOR radio (one of 3 stations my 2 transistor radio could dial in in central NJ) on Saturday nights. Jean Shepherd had a live show where he just talked for hours. I was hypnotized by his style. The movie just took it a step further..

We got my son a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas after watching it. He shot empty milk jugs or filled with water onbthe ground in back yard surrounded by a 6 ft wooden fence until the jerk behind us called the police. He never shot it un supervised and never above 1ft above ground

Our family customarily watches a few rounds of Ralfie together where ever we gather for Christmas. It's one of a handful of films that is truly comic in just about every scene, along with timeless human warmth and amazing attention to period detail. As I replied to a post here a couple of weeks ago my youngest daughter has a set of the light blue fiesta ware dishes that she uses for every day and a seasonal leg lamp too.
