Home Depot are recalling more than 190000 ceiling fans after it turned out that blades can fly off. 47 incidents have been reported with 2 people being hit and 4 reports of property damage. Newspaper ArticleI’ve always been suspicious of those things whirring overhead.

The Stones and Beatles always said that back in the early days, they were always terrified of having to "run the gauntlet of screaming fans" after a concert.
No...wait...that was different.
Never mind...

I knew a man in charge of importing ceiling fans from China for a major US supplier. He said that the material and labor cost was under $3.00 each. They paid more for packaging and more for transportation but that the actual cost of production was so low as to be unbelievable. Part of this was due to the workers being paid pennies a day and that the "factory" was outside in open air and the workers worked year round out in the weather. They worked from sunrise to sunset without electric lighting. Also that all trash and manufacturing waste was shoveled directly into the river running beside the "factory", and that river was filthy. When anyone says that American "can't compete", realize that we would never allow such pollution or what we would consider abusive conditions. Yet we allow those products to be sold here. I like cheap as much as anyone but-------.
