They didn't and wouldn't accept my banking info no matter how I tried on last check. So I got a paper one eventually.
TO my surprise, yesterday morning, boom, there it was in my bank account?

My last free prize was sent to my bank account (I gave the IRS my account # for the last tax refund.) Now I see they are mailing me the next check today. Wonder why.

Sooo, I checked in at the IRS and their note indicated a check would be mailed on Jan 6. Odd that I received direct deposit the first time and now should expect a check. Ok, I'll play along.
Now the plot takes a turn. Checking the mailbox today I got what appeared to be a junk mail envelope from Money Network Financial, not the IRS or Treasury Dept. Came THAT close to just tossing it as I usually do to that stuff. Opened it and there's a card with my name on it and a number to call to activate.
Googled it and so far it looks legit as the expected covid payment but I haven't followed through yet. Of course, the card demands that one agrees to an unwieldy "cardmember agreement" with many fees for various uses.
With all the resources at hand for this massive distribution I am really shocked a third party is needed to distribute these funds. And, very little in the news about the enlistment of a private company debit card being sent or a need to agree to this company's contract.
I'm thinking about my next move.

Your next move would be to contact the IRS and enquire as...enquiring minds want to know!

Apparently it may be legit, although I know nobody else that received a card instead of a check or direct deposit. Not a scam!?

From the IRS website:
"IRS and Treasury urge eligible people who don’t receive a direct deposit to watch their mail carefully during this period for a check or an Economic Impact Payment card, which is sponsored by the Treasury Department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service and is issued by Treasury’s financial agent, MetaBank®, N.A. The Economic Impact Payment Card will be sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal. It has the Visa name on the front of the Card and the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A. on the back of the card. Information included with the card will explain that this is your Economic Impact Payment. More information about these cards is available at EIPcard.com."
It may indeed be legit but it sure has not been very widely communicated. And, that "prominently displayed" Treasury Dept logo is less than prominent for those of us that really don't know what their logo looks like. But, it is present.

“The Economic Impact Payment Card will be sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal.”
This seems key.

It makes sense. If the idea is to stimulate the economy, giving people cash is stupid. Anyone who “doesn’t need it” (and I have a PayPal address anyone who “doesn’t need it” can send it to lol) will just hang onto it.
Put it on a debit closed and most people will spend it.
Me, I would use it for my weekly groceries until it was gone, and be happy that I saved some money. So it wouldn’t work on me.

“The Economic Impact Payment Card will be sent in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal.” This seems key. Well, there is a logo visible through the sender window but it does not look like an official seal. That white envelope with a logo in the corner is exactly what junk mail looks like. I suspect this will become an issue as more and more people disregard this mail. It really appears to be either a harmless sales piece or a scam. And, once opened and you read that you must agree to the bank card terms of service before the card will be activated it appears even more problematic. We'll see.

We received such a card yesterday and my red flags went up, especially since before reading the last few posts here, I had heard nothing about such a method of dispersal.
I'm still suspicious.

As an economist, I think that the idea of giving a cash stimulus directly to taxpayers is much more effective than the "quantitative easing" techniques generally used here, which ultimately ends up in the pockets of bankers and doesn't do much to stimulate demand in the economy.

Mine just goes in my cash (checking) account and since money is fungible, I can’t determine where it gets spent! Now the last deposit I got, $2400, was spent 4 days later at the dentist for a new bridge. It was very timely!

Mine came last week. This is a good sign because the one in the spring took forever because they wouldn't let me give them my bank information. It means they actually kept the information for this round.
My payment in the spring ended up going towards my taxes, which were delayed as part of the same program. My $600 will do the same, as will the $2k if that ever happens. There's some irony in that, for sure. Oh, the fun of being a 1099 worker!

I believe the $2K (actually $1400 for a total of $2K), will be coming but rollout may be slower because of tax refunds going out. Whether or not it is a beneficial thing, it’s going to happen. A lot of promises in this area were made and many will expect congress to make good on it. The long term effects notwithstanding.
