I was gazing at a map of the U.S. today and am still intrigued by how the states got their shapes. I mean the square one's are a no brainer, but the others?

Needed a certain amount of people to become a State. So they drew the lines to encompass enough people.

There was a show on the History Channel that was exactly about this.

Rivers and lakes play part and topography to a certain extent. The northeastern corner of Kansas is defined by the Missouri River and many states borders are defined partly by the Mississippi River.

When I was a kid we had a jigsaw puzzle of the then-48 states. Sometimes I would confuse Wyoming and Colorado. Sometimes I wonder what the map would look like if they started at Maine''s northernmost point, measured 300 miles south, made that the southern border, then went 300 miles west (unless the St. Lawrence River is closer), and that's the western border. And went from there, with the states 300 miles north-to-south and 300 miles east-to-west. The landlocked states would all look alike.

I think they should all be shaped like Ginger or Marianne, but that's just me

I think we should reorganize and make all counties across the country states. Wait...that would make my state, the state of Multnomah...never mind, put it right out of your mind.

I think we should reorganize and make all counties across the country states. Actually that was the intent. All States were sovereign and the Capitol was like the federal Government and the included counties were like States. That is an over simplification but the Federal Government was only there to settle disputes between States and for the National defense. State government was set up on the same model. Except any State could include any system it wanted. I see this becoming political, hot button. We all can see that the original intent has been overruled and any discussion of if it is better, or worse, violates the rules here. Yes natural lines, like rivers played into the drawing of State lines, but it was a population minimum that drove the rest. Look at Michigan.

If they were all square, kids in school trying to fill in a map would be screwed.

I propose all states be redesigned as circles.

^^ THAT would solve the Four-color Map Problem. Every state could be the same color.
