Another trip down the Utube rabbit hole. 35 minutes of dialogue free restoration of an old soviet era Russian Ural motorcycle and sidecar combo. Prime time viewing Seriously, this is a joy for tinkerers - barely a power tool in sight.

That is a great video. I wish I had more time to watch every vid like this, because of all the useful tips one can pick up just by watching someone work.
There is something extremely satisfying about breaking something down into its individual parts and putting it back together in better condition than I found it, and hitting the GO button and it goes.
Give me a shop full of tools and stay the heck out of my way and I'm a happy guy. Unless, of course, you're a toolie freak like myself and came to join in the fun!

I wonder if the parts are interchangeable with the Ukranian Dnepr (pronounced knee-per). They are both BMW knockoffs.

I wonder if the parts are interchangeable with the Ukranian Dnepr (pronounced knee-per). They are both BMW knockoffs. I was watching another (too many) U-Tube vid the other night - Jay Leno's Garage - a British Bristol 403 - made by the Bristol aircraft company - with a very familiar looking double kidney grille. Turns out, post WWII, the British government encouraged aircraft manufacturers such as Bristol to get into motor vehicles in lieu of bomber contracts and offered them their choice of the German motor manufacturers to strip as war reparations. They turned down VW (going nowhere) but took the BMW 2 litre straight 6 and other bits presumably. I wonder was it the same story with Ural/Dnieper?

If you like old bikes, check out the Youtube videos of the Wheels Through Time museum in North Carolina. A lot of old iron, most unrestored and running. The guy has a bunch of videos where they highlight one of their bikes, talk about it, start it up and sometimes go for a ride. I found it fascinating and spent quite a bit of time watching.

I went to that museum. It is very cool and I talked to Dale Walksler the owner . A very nice and down to earth guy. He had a show called "what's in the barn" on cable a few years back.

If you’re into old motorcycles you should look into joining this organization. I’ve been a member since 1983 and have enjoyed many years of national meets, road runs, and swap meets. AMCA

I'd love to get a 500 MKIII and tinker on it. My buddy had one growing up. It was silly fast for it's day.
