Welp, it finally happened, my trusty old HP machine running Windows 7 croaked yesterday. My monitor is displaying the screensaver photo, but the machine is otherwise DOA. It went wonky, locked up, and wouldn't come back to life after a reboot.
(I'm typing this from my phone.)
Can't complain, it's been a wonderful machine, and it lived for 50 weeks beyond the end-of-support date. A sad day, but not unexpected.
Anybody else still limping along with Win7?

I did the free Win 10 upgrade several years ago on both my Dell and HP laptops. They’ve both been fine.

When my mom passed away awhile ago, I ended up with her fairly new Windows 10 machine.
It's been stashed under my desk for a year and a half. I'll drag it out today and get it hooked up.

I’ve said it before, I never have an issue when they upgrade windows, and I always get the newest version available. Back when the upgrades were not free, I would let it ride. But when I got a new computer, it would have the latest version. Any differences are usually figured out the first day.
Windows 10 took a couple extra days because in the age of iPads and iPhones, I rarely use my home computer.

Still running 7 on my DAW, but its offline. I have so much invested in time and money with this box I dread it when it croaks. I wonder what the particulars are of installing Win 7 on a new laptop just to keep the now legacy system chugging for it's intended purpose. For clarity, my version of Pro Tools (10) will not run on Windows 10 and I'm not upgrading to a subscription service.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 a year or so ago. Along the way, with each Windows update my computer started having problems. First it was the occasional blue screen of death and then it became the weekly blue screen of death if not more frequent. It would catch me in the middle of a project and inevitably I would lose data. I’d then have to sit there and wait for my machine to reboot, go through diagnostics, etc.
A computer engineer I know said that the hardware of a Windows 7 machine will ultimately not be able to handle updates. So I put my old machine out to pasture and bought a proper Windows 10 computer.

I would still be running windows 7 on my laptop and desktop but I had to move to windows 10 because some of my waves plugins won't run on windows 7.

I am still running Vista, but I suspect this is the year that I will upgrade (for multiple reasons).

I did the free Win 10 upgrade several years ago on both my Dell and HP laptops. They’ve both been fine. the latitude cpu was one of the ARM chipsets and when i tried to upgrade to 10, i was refused because the chip was not compatible... i had a samsung combo tablet/detachable keyboard with the same chip that was orphaned too...
that p'd me off pretty much, i thought i should have been given a raincheck for another unit later...

I've been working on setting up this Windows 10 machine that I inherited all afternoon. Man, what a PIA!
Think I'll pop for a new monitor, mouse, and keyboard. These that I'm using all came with the old machine, what, 11-12 years ago? Can't believe all the keys on the keyboard still work.
Any suggestions for a good monitor?

My mom still has Win7 Professional on her laptop. It may be showing its age, though. She only uses it for email, or to read the obits (I haven't succumbed to that past-time, yet)
Still, one of these days, I expect it will, "bite the dust" and deserve an obit of its own lol

Our first computer had Windows 3.1 HATED IT. Windows 95 was somewhat better but still irritating to add things. Windows XP Was the first decent OS. At that point I started building my own desktop PC’s. A friend has Windows Millenium ( horribly slow , no painfully slow) . Got Windows Vista and it was problematic then upgraded to Windows 7. It was the best version of Windows made. I now have Windows 10 Pro on Descktop PC and doing ok. Had bluescreen of death until I got into bios and changed settings on built in Video card. Now been stable for over a year

I have an old laptop out in my shed that I use for looking up parts and such when I'm working on something. It still works fine. Until it dies I will continue to use it. It does what I need it to do. I can even print on my wireless printer that's in the house from it as long as the Wi-Fi is working. Sometimes it's a little slow since the shed is separated from the house and my router is in a closet at the other end of it. Most of the time it works great. If it ain't broke I'm not going to fix it.

I would add, I have never had an OS issue, nor have I heard of anyone else having one, on an Apple product.
We are running 10+ year old Macs in the office, and they are still running perfectly.

PT 10 will run on that. Otherwise when Win 7 croaks it might be time to consider changing DAWs. I'm using PT11 on a Windows 8.1 machine and it works fine. I also have PT12 which came with my Eleven Rack and could install it. I'm not sure if it will run on Win 10 or not. If it doesn't and my machine dies then I may switch to Cubase or Ableton as much as I hate to.

With pro audio apps like Pro Tools some of the newer OS for Macs have had issues and wouldn't work until they came up with fixes for them.

I was referring more to OS crashes and blue screens and such. I am sure people still have problems with them, but I never hear stories of people’s computers just suddenly giving up the ghost like with Windows machines.

i have some old laptops that were overwhelmed by the bulkiness of windows beyond the xp version... i downloaded a version of ubuntu and installed it. it put new life into that old boxes. only problem is the software i want to use is not available in linux.
there is also a version of the chrome OS... installable on pc's that work well. i have used it with success. odd thing, it's based on linux and one of the laptops i installed a dual boot... chrome and ubuntu... interestingly they became intermixed... it worked well.
if you're wanting an internet device, these are great and cheap... but there is still the software thing... i went back to windows 7. i use norton 360 with the firewall set pretty strict... i don't use it much on-line. it sits on my radio desk and is dedicated to keeping up with logging the contacts i make.
