Each year, after digging out my charitable contribution records for tax preparation, I take an oath to stop giving to so many worthy causes.
One thing I have learned over the years is that writing a check to "Blah-Blah" unleashes the Charity Kraken, usually confined to that category of need. Then, caught during a weak moment, a check sent to "Bling-Bling," likewise perks up the ears in that category. And so on. Before long, my mailbox groans under the weight of donation pleas from all over the world. On a slow day there will only be 5 or 6. Then, the little gifts begin: address labels, bumper stickers, notepads, calendars. Luckily no one gave me a calendar as a Christmas gift this year, because I already had a dozen or so, in all sizes, ready for January 1.
The organizations out there! I must've sent a check to an animal rescue fund in 2020, because the offshoots were soon sprouting in my mailbox like weeds. Now I'm called upon to not only save the whales, but the sharks, the lobsters, the clams, the oysters, the fishermen who can't put out to sea because of decimated shrimp populations, the save-the-shrimp-groups, the groups against the fishermen, as well as those in opposition to those against those in favor. It just never ends.
So, here it is, January 2nd and I have not yet written out a single donation check! (But there was no mail delivery yesterday, so .....)
