When I went to visit my mom in the U.P. Thanksgiving I brought back her Kirby vacuum home with me. It's the second one she's owned in 55 plus years. She said it quit working and thought she killed it because she let the bag get too full. I said I'll have a look at it. Took it apart , pulled one brush out, like new, pulled the other one out , spring but no brush. Now all I got to do is locate some brushes and she'll be back in business. That thing is built like a sherman tank.

We bought my mom a Dyson around 2010 because she needed something a bit easier to handle. After she passed in 2012 (not from vacuuming) we took it and have been using it ever since. I recently took it apart and ordered some parts and its still rockin'. The design on those Dysons is quite bizarre.

Shop vac will get the job done. I’ve used mine to vacuum up all sorts of things.
For household usage , you can’t beat a dyson.

Those old Kirby vacuums are monsters. My mom had one ever since I remember. When she passed my younger sister took it and it still gets used regularly. The only thing that's ever been done to it is replacing belts and had to replace the latch that holds the accessories to it, once, due to wear. Other than that it still works great. It's over 55 years old. I got one of these a few years ago and it ROCKS! It will pick up dog vomit for sure. www.lowes.com/pd/Shop-Vac-14-Gallon-6-5-HP-Portable-Wet-Dry-Shop-Vacuum/999957747Powerful suction and a lot of capacity. My old friend and guitar tech has an older comparable model that he's had ever since I've known him, over 20 years. He was vacuuming the inside of an acoustic guitar once and a big rag got sucked into the sound hole. It created a seal and broke the top of the guitar. I have used it a number of times to suck up the remaining water in my cellar after the sump pump is finished. A great unit!

Depending on the, err... consistency (yeekkk), when you clean out the shop vac keep an eye on the filter and make sure it didn't get hit with any. If it did give it a light cleaning so it doesn't get funky.
