We have a cheap 4 slice B&D toaster that we really regret purchasing. It takes 'forever' to toast a slice of bread, that's the main issue we have. Then when the toast finally pops up, by that time we've forgotten that we even put the bread in there; it makes almost no noise when popping the bread, and then we come back later to cold "toast" that won't even melt the butter when applied. Standing there watching it for over 5 minutes is NOT an option! If there was a world record for slowest toaster, we might enter it. So, I went to my long time staple, CR, and looked at their reviews. Almost all of their reviews said that there were few or no "cons" to their tested toasters. But there are also consumer reviews listed, and every toaster I looked at had complaints from consumers who had experienced failures or problems within the first few weeks or months, including uneven toasting, burnt toast, burnt out heating elements, etc etc etc! So, our "requirements" don't seem all that outlandish, to me. 1. Toast a piece, or a few pieces of bread within about 3 minutes, not 5 or 6 minutes. 2. Have a "bagel" feature that actually functions as it should. 3. Have filaments that at least turn red while functioning, so that we can tell that they're functioning! It should be easy to tell if the "bagel" function is working correctly, for example. Usually the "bagel" feature requires a push of a button, but does that confirm that it's only going to toast one side. After a few hours of checking reviews, I'm beginning to wonder if "anyone" makes a toaster that will last more than about a year or so. And don't even bother consulting customer service if you experience a problem. I can't understand why it appears to be so difficult to find a good, reliable toaster. Please don't tell me how good yours is, unless you've had it at least a few years. Thanks! I suspect most of the 'good' toasters will be about 20 years old, or more. We are sorry we ever switched to a newer toaster!

Just buy crackers to begin with.

No complaints with my Black and Decker TR2400SD
It's only a 2 slice though.

Just buy crackers to begin with. We enjoy crackers with cheese and soup, but occasionally want an English muffin or toasted Bagel.

Funny, I’m looking to replace my toaster as well. Whatever I get, it’ll be a four slicer. Most of the time it’s one person just stoasting for themselves, but I would like the option to do four at once for the times where that isn’t the case.

If you can deal w going to a thrift shop these days you can find one for $5-10 bucks. I usually use toaster ovens and managed to snag 4 almoost new Cuisinarts for under $12. Gave a couple away recently to friends in need.

our toaster is old...really old. Don't remember what it is but I am thinking B&D. I will check. It is ok but I can't convince my wife the knob is a timer not a temp control.

We are also looking for a 4 slicer. I do think older is better, seemed like most of our toasters lasted forever. Reading reviews, you're lucky to get a couple of years out of the newer ones. Even a $300 toaster on CR received bad reviews.

My mother recently bought us a four slicer that actually works well - I’ll try to find out which one it is.

We have the 2-slice Cuisinart version. Wonderful toaster. Does one sided bagel toasting, has a frozen waffle button, does perfect toast every time. I would assume the 4 slice version does the same.

If you go too old you may find something with asbestos lining. Yummy.

Hand built in the UK... Dualit Toasters. Would pair nicely with a Marshall or Vox!

FWIW, while researching the Dualit Toaster, I found this site with several different "high end" toasters, if anyone is interested. I haven't made a decision yet, but the reviews IMO are important and they will be a factor. Better toasters?

I promise I'm not a Dualit toaster salesman! Besides, we got rid of the decidedly plebian toaster and upgraded to a toaster OVEN. You are fooling with a bagel at a time while I'm toasting dozens over here. Get on my toaster oven level!

Another toaster oven fan here. I have the Breville that moose0130 linked above. It's been rock solid for several years now. We only have counter space for one small box-like appliance, so it has to serve multiple duties. Ours may get replaced soon for one with dough proofing abilities. My wife proofs dough in the laundry room when the dryer is running, but it has proven to be inconsistent. Another plus is the air-frying capabilities that seem to come along with the proofing abilities. Seems like a good excuse to up my mozzarella stick intake.

Proper toast is crisp outside yet still soft inside. I remember that clearly from my youth. To get toast like that requires that the heating elements get really hot, really fast. Somewhere along the trip through the years, toasters got cheaper but the product just went to hell. Those slow toasters are not just slow, they bake the inside until it's hard and dry by the time the outside turns brown. The Japanese take toast seriously, they want perfecton, and they have the solution. Google "Balmuda" and understand why the WalMart special just won't cut it. No, I won't buy a Balmuda!

Have you come across any Balmudas actually made in Japan? The ones I saw for sale were clearly labeled Made in China.

As long as there's a good strong drink at the end who cares who is doing the toasting? :-)

That one looks great also, and within our fixed income budget. Thanks!! Reviews look pretty good so far... It’s showing an additional $20 off right now, too. It’s definitely worth $40, and even the usual $60. It’s actually the best toaster I’ve owned in years.
