Toasters today don't get hot enough. The resistance wires should look like a light bulb. I'd kill for a early 70's Sunbeam.
The asbestos is not a problem unless it is cracked.
I've got the above linked toaster and it is OK but it still takes 5 min to toast

It may not be 5 min, but it takes longer to toast bread than it does to cook an egg.
At least both sides of the bread look the same.

I also wanted to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. Several good suggestions were made, so I've gone by reviews and prices to make a decision. I also think the older toasters with the brighter heat filaments made better toast, but we shall see...

I think I might be ok with that trade off. It's only a problem in dust form. The hard ceramic type pieces that were in toasters were not a problem. Car brakes were. The sprayed on stuff on hot water pipes were OK till it started fraying.... I think we would be OK with the ceramic type asbestos insulators. Not the rest. IMO of course.

I’ll still pass. I have the time to wait for toast. Rather, I don’t make toast if I don’t have the time.

Yea, if and when they would end in a land fill they could get crushed into dust.
I learned to start the bacon then toast then eggs. Works for me, but I do miss the toast from my youth.
Mom used to make toast with plenty of butter, she would tear it up into a bowl then toss in a couple of eggs over easy and mix it up.
YUM!

Proper toast is crisp outside yet still soft inside. I remember that clearly from my youth. To get toast like that requires that the heating elements get really hot, really fast. Somewhere along the trip through the years, toasters got cheaper but the product just went to hell. Those slow toasters are not just slow, they bake the inside until it's hard and dry by the time the outside turns brown. The Japanese take toast seriously, they want perfecton, and they have the solution. Google "Balmuda" and understand why the WalMart special just won't cut it. No, I won't buy a Balmuda! After researching the Balmudas, I'm convinced that cooking toast faster (like in the good ol' days) does produce better toast. But that's not the only reason, another is the cold toast that I come back to when I finally remember that about 10 minutes ago, I started making some toast. If the B&D at least dinged when the toast was finished, I could probably live with it. It makes almost no noise whatsoever when the toast finally pops up around 5 minutes later.

I enjoyed some nice crispy toast this morning, in a little over 2.5 minutes. The filaments get nice and red like they're supposed to! A very nice improvement over the cheap B&D we were using! Thanks again for the suggestion HD!!

We have the Ninja Foodie Air Fryer. It's a toaster, toaster oven, air fryer and about 5 other things. It makes up to 9 slices of toast at a time and works flawlessly in every mode we've used it for. Neat thing, it also flips up vertically when not in use to save counter space. Eliminated the need for a few different appliances in the kitchen. Read and watched a bunch of reviews and video reviews before we bought it have no regrets even though it's a little pricey.

Thanks again for the suggestion HD!! I’m glad it is working out! You and I have similar experience with this Cusimax (not Cusinart) but it sounds like K4 (and possibly @mfitz804 too) might have bum versions of it. The specific model I linked works really well for us on bread, frozen bread, bagels and frozen bagels. We haven’t tried English muffins yet. Fast and well toasted, with lots of power in reserve.

If you don't like modern toasters you can always buy an old one on the bay. Toasters are things that are sometimes given as gifts and many wind up in the attic unused and pop up (no pun intended) on ebay. Or hit a thrift store, no shortage of them there.

I think every single toaster I checked had at least some bad reviews. Some from people just too picky (like me?) and others from early failures or other issues. And thanks for the correction on the brand, I honestly thought it was a Cusinart! My reading comprehension must not be what it used to be. LOL.

You should probably note the type of bread you used. Different types/brands of bread toast quite differently in my experience. Did any else read Timed Toast Tests and think Woot!!

And I keep my sourdough in the fridge, so that’s a double whammy on times needed.
