Looking to relocate to Tennessee in the near future. Like the Knoxville area. Looking for a rural locale in that vicinity. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Oops! Wrong place. Please move to Moes. Sorry.

I wish I lived closer so I could help you out. I'm about 2.5 hours away, between Chattanooga and Nashville. I've been through Knoxville many times, and even done some work there, but not enough to really know the outlying area. Have you tried Zillow? If you search for a particular nearby city, it sometimes has descriptions of what it's like to live there. It might give you some ideas of where to look. Good luck!!! example

I'm from Chattanooga but would say outside of the tricities, Knoxville, Chattanooga and maybe Cleveland, anywhere in East TN is pretty rural lol. Don't know how far away from Knoxville you want to be but my favorite area near there would be the Maryville area, it's right near the Knoxville airport and close to the backway into the Smokies so you don't have to drive through Pigeon Forge, etc, also near the river for watersports.

Thank you both. We are getting Zillow listings. Maryville / Seymour area is our starting point. How do you like Chattanooga, Flyon?

we have talked about moving to the townsend area of the smokeys... its not too far from knoxville/pigeon forge/gatlinburg, but doesn't see quite the traffic. the times we've been there anyway. i like the cosby area too... you're close to everything but it's still pretty wild looking. we used to travel around norris dam, that's a nice area... and we liked the area north of oakridge...
i don't know if we'll ever make it down there. i have 85 acres here i'm tired of taking care of and i'm ready to sell out. just haven't been able to talk the wifey into it yet.

How do you like Chattanooga, Flyon? So I'm a pretty massive fan of my hometown area, but am admittedly biased. I've been here for 30/36 years and the only other places I've lived are SoCal and the Czech Republic. no state income tax, free state, low COL, very safe if you pick the right area, little-no traffic (again, area specific), mid-size so has a few professional sports teams (minor league baseball, soccer), orchestra, zoo, fine-dining options, but still has a small southern town feel. Small airport with about a 15minute door to gate security/checkin time, direct flights to Chicago, NYC, most connect in ATL or Charlotte, so flying internationally I usually just drive to ATL (2hrs). Climate is 4 true seasons with a fairly mild winter and slightly hot summer. The lifestyle revolves around watersports (kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding), boating, swimming holes etc in the summer, hiking/hunting in the winter, and either in spring/fall. Smokies are 2hr away but you can do basically every outdoor activity other than surfing and snowboarding within minutes of downtown. My house is about a quarter mile from the lake so I walk my dogs by the water every day, marina with boat is 5 min away, there are 7 different small WMAs within a 10 minute drive, Lake Chickamauga is usually in the top 5 nationally for bass-fishing, downtown is 18 minutes, around 10-12 hikes with swimming holes and backcountry camping opportunities within a 20 min drive and within an hour there are hundreds. Awesome mtn biking and rock climbing as well and world-class motorcycling all around the city.

Thanks, Flyon! You make a good ambassador for your town. I've watched few Chattanooga tourism videos and it looks like a great place to live.
