Not too long ago I asked a question about turning a closed back Mustang 2 v2 into an open back. Well no one commented so I decided to try. I didn't cut the stock back but used some plywood instead. Not a tough job but I had to be careful. It came out ok and opening the back made an entirely different amp. I haven't painted it yet but when I do I'll post a pic. s:0)

Before, it was really boxy but now it's very full. The amp is 40 watts rms or so go the specs.
Now it sounds like a 40 watt amp.

Cool! Opening up a closed-back cab generally makes a cabinet sound more "live;" it spreads the sound around the room better. And the phase cancelation issue is usually not a problem because the attenuated band is fairly narrow. It also reduces a speaker's beaminess.

Several months ago I decided to swap the OEM speaker out of my ol' GDEC3-30 and replace it with a Eminence Ram Rod 10" I had in my workshop (actually a suggested replacement from Eminence). It helped to entertain me while in Covid lockdowns. The speaker was an incredible improvement in it's performance, and frankly, was impressed as this guy sounds like a big boy now! But I also decided to leave the back off. It gives it a more ambient, live presence of sound in the room as opposed to that beaming, directed sound you get with the closed back. Now I'm just wrestling with the idea of either cutting the original back (to retain the material used on the rest of the cab) or just cut a new half back panel. In either case, it sure adds a little company when I'm playing on my own!

Interesting, I put a Weber 10F150 in my GDEC 30 and also noticed an improvement, I’ll have to pull the back panel and give it a go.
