walking home after dropping my car off for service I couldn't believe how much trash there was. is it really that hard to keep a trash bag in your vehicle for wrappers and bottles, or just wait til you get home to throw them away? doesn't anyone listen to William Conrad? sheesh!

Funny thing is, the "crying Indian" was actually an Italian-American actor named Espera Oscar de Corti.
Yes. seriously.

I live on a semi-rural road but it is one of very few that connect from one highway to another so it gets some through traffic. My yard must be right at one beer from either a gas station or liquor store. I pick beer cans up out of my yard all of the time. If it's not that it's fast food bags and cups.

One of my fondest memories from working patrol: on a beautiful morning in 1975, I was waiting at a traffic light in my black and white, behind a shiny red Corvette Stingray. The driver door opened, and to my astonishment, the guy behind the wheel leaned out to empty his overfull ashtray onto the street; even "tang-tang-tanged" it on the asphalt, to get the lastof the dregs. When the light turned green I lit him up. After I explained why I had stopped him, it was his turn to be astonished and then angry, when I had him sign his ticket for littering. (The fine at that time was $250 dollars). I got the ever popular "shouldn't you be out catching burglars," lecture.
Never gets old.

I consider leaving your dogs excrement in public places where it falls to be the worst sort of littering. (OK: dumping highly-toxic chemicals by the roadside or used motor oil into a storm drain might qualify as worse).
I clean up all my dogs' crap every day when I walk them and consider it to be just one of the responsibilities of dog ownership. Too many people evidently don't share that opinion.

I must live just far enough away from a convenience store for people to get their candy bar unwrapped or their lottery ticket scratched off. I picked their trash up daily from my front yard.

BTW: dropping your dirty , old COVID mask in the gutter isn't littering...
...if you judge by the number I've seen there.

My grandparents lived on a corner that was right between the train station and a high school. The side bushes were constantly filled with bottles, cans, wrappers and the like that the students would simply deposit there, I assume since it was on the side and they assumed they wouldn’t get caught.
Which they didn’t.
I was offered $5 any time I visited to clean it up, which I always did.

We used to live on a corner lot and one morning I got up for work and there were beer cans all over my yard. My wife said " Probably my silly brother Mike". That coupled with it was the type beer he drank I put them in a 50 gallen trash bag and that night carefully distributed them all over his yard. LOL

I look at people who throw crap out of their cars the same as those who purposely defile public restrooms. Its not laziness, it's a deliberate misanthropic act. They know someone else is going to clean up their filth and take pleasure in it.

I'm not saying it's OK, but at least dog poop is biodegradable. When I walk my dog, I pick up the poop and I make the dog carry the bag! We have a harness and, after I knot the bag, I twist it and slide it into the leash's clasp just below the knot. She kinda got spooked by the sound for about 5 minutes the first time I did it, but after that she doesn't seem to care at all. Yes, I really hate carrying a bag of dog poop.

Dogs have a strange relationship with poop:
•Beetches (trying to dodge the language sensor, here) eat their puppies' crap in the den to prevent the smell from attracting predators.
•Just consider where dogs' noses spend a good deal of time: sniffing other dogs' butts (or their own...or yours).
•All members of a given pack of those African Wild Dogs routinely roll in the excrement of the alpha male and female.

People can be disgusting. Just before Christmas I was driving around looking for somewhere different to walk my dog. I remembered a small hill that had a short, maybe mile and a half, loop trail. There is a small parking area at the trailhead. I backed into the space, got out of the truck, and found that the lot was littered with literally dozens of presumably used condoms. The fornicators had even gotten creative by festooning some of the branches of the small trees surrounding the lot with rubbers.
If this was going on right in a public parking area, I didn't want to know what was happening out on the secluded trail. I just got in the truck and went somewhere else.

I am amazed at the trash that I must clean from my yard from passing cars. Cigarette butts, cups, bottles whole and broken, cans, wrappers, packing materials, you name it. It seems to have gotten worse over the past few years.

A couple of years ago I was driving through my town when I saw a driver throw an empty glass bottle over the side of the road. The a**h*** was driving a delivery truck with one of those "How's my driving" stickers on the back with a company name and # to call.
I pulled over, called the number, and gave the gal (receptionist for such'n such delivery service)the vehicle's license plate #, location, and exact time. I told her that my town does-not tolerate littering and that I would report the same to our police dept.
Her response: We don't tolerate that either..we-will-take-care-of-him.

First of all: good on ya for being a responsible dog owner by picking up. Dog poop may be biodegradable, but so are human feces. It's a question of volume, IMO. If I quickly calculate what my own, personal contribution to degradation of neighborhood quality of life alone would've been had I not picked up our dogs' production...let's see...number of dogs X length of ownership X evacuations per day = over 7,000 dog turds.
The more dog piles there are laying around, the harder it gets to to avoid accidentally stepping in one and potentially carrying it home on your shoe. In addition, they smell bad, are full of bacteria and can harbor disease and parasites. That being the case, somebody leaving their dog's poop randomly laying where it falls is an indication of how little regard they have for their neighbors. At least, that's how I see it.

I have a friend who has an old Boxer. he was capable of keeping a bobcat operator busy and he loved to jump fences. The neighbors would tell my buddy his dog was jumping fences and leaving deposits in their yards. My friend went around on Saturday morning and picked up after his dog being a nice guy. The dog started branching out farther and my friend was walking two or three blocks as people would tell him his dog was seen further away. In a few months he was walking 4-5 hours every Saturday and picking up sacks full of Boxer doo-doo. One day he was thinking about it and decided to mix corn in the dog's food. Afterwards he did that for years. he could walk around a block or two and when folks would say that it was his dogs he could look down and say well that one is mine and that one but those other piles can't be. Now that sounds funny but he got his day back after a while. It's hard to argue with evidence...

Littering makes no sense to me and is one of the most selfish things someone can do. Yep.
I spent a summer working in Yosemite Valley years ago. On my one day off per week, I'd hike up into the back country and would find garbage dropped by the side of the trail. Never understood somebody who'd expend the effort to lug full six packs of beer 10-15 miles on foot couldn't be bothered to pack out his empties, which weighed next to nothing.
Presumable, a person goes back packing to enjoy relatively unsullied wilderness. Leaving trash behind on your way out denies that experience to the next guy.

We used to have a group of kids that would park in front of our neighbor’s house, eat McDonalds food, and throw all of the bags and wrappers out the window.
Having caught them in the act one night, I started picking up the garbage and throwing it back in the car. Got a few pieces. In before they put the window up.
They abruptly pulled away from the curb and fled the scene. And never returned.
