RIP Tommy.
On a Sat baseball Game of the Week (remember those?) he said one of the funniest things I'd ever heard. If I remember right, Tommy was coaching 3rd, and Pete Rose was the runner at 3rd. Tommy was micced by NBC and they had his audio on. He said to Rose something like "Hey Pete congratulations...I heard you came in 2nd in the team Beauty pageant....LONG pause...all the other guys tied for 1st". At that moment the ball was hit and Rose needed to react, and did. I never understood how Rose wasn't LOL'ing from the comment. It's an old joke now but I'd never heard it before. As a huge fan of the Big Red Machine, I HATED the Dodgers, but always loved Lasorda.

They don't make 'em like that anymore. Thanks for the entertainment Tommy Lasagna.

Awww. He helped bring real personality to baseball when it was America's sport.
Rest in peace, Tommy.

He seemed to really care about the game, the teams and did not care about other opinions. The game today could use some more of that and less corporate robots.
RIP Tommy thanks for all the great memories.

A true legend! Growing up in LA during that era was incredible. Tommy made the best pinch hit call of all time!

Thanks for that, krrf. I've seen that clip a million times and still get a kick out of it. Look at the names in there: Tommy Lasorda, Kirk Gibson, Dennis Eckersley, Mark McGwire, Mike Sciocia, Orel Hersheiser, and called by the great Vin Scully. Those were the days!
I got to see Kirk Gibson play in the old Tigers Stadium, and several times in Kansas City. They don't make 'em like him anymore. Such a stud.
And I went to a game at Dodgers Stadium back around '05 or so. Was there with a bunch of guys from work for a union convention. Several of them (not me, unfortunately) got into the elevator, and were followed in by Tommy himself. He went way out of his way to shake their hands and welcome them to the game. Couldn't have been nicer. He was Mr. Baseball.
RIP, Tommy.

So influential he was able to get the Dodgers to draft his friend’s son as a courtesy. That son would have a long career and is now in the Hall of Fame. That man is Mike Piazza. He may never have had a chance without Tommy Lasorda.

I was never a Dodger fan, but I always liked Tommy Lasorda. I thought he was a great guy. But I, too, had thought he had already passed on.
