I’m sitting in the living room while my daughter is in the kitchen on a FaceTime call with one of her theater friends. They are trying to sing various songs and I’m just listening to my daughter changing the key to better suit her voice and I don’t even think she knows what she is doing. But she’s doing it right.
She’s come a long way since her first performance at 4 years old!

How did the guitar lessons pan out?
Glad to hear that the innate musicality is there.
I’m proud of my daughter too. It comes very easily. I try very hard to make sure that she’s proud of me😀

She still has no real interest in guitar. She has asked about piano lately.

She still has no real interest in guitar. She has asked about piano lately. I tried with my daughter too. A Squier Hello Kitty Strat was purchased. A Roland Cube arrived too, courtesy of my musical brother. Not much progress was made but a succession of boyfriends enjoyed demonstrating their guitar chops in the years that followed. Her fiancé doesn’t have a musical bone in his body. Go figure. It’s the black Hello Kitty, not the pink one and for a few years now I’ve thought about enquiring after it.

Your story sounds similar to mine in that I bought my daughter an inexpensive guitar and amp she asked for but kept wondering why she wasn’t trying to learn and found she bought it so guys she dated could play it. She does play some piano and the guy she married plays guitar and sings. I’m proud of what both kids have become. My son is a Staff Sargent in the US Air Force and daughter is an RN with a Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

We bought a 3/4 size acoustic that she never touched. She is more interested in electric but still, not really.
I have electrics she can play when she is so inclined so no investment until it’s warranted.

She needs a Marshall and a Les Paul. And you know, if she happened not to be interested...I suppose I could use them.

Pushing her to take an instrument is probably the worst thing to do (maybe, I don't know) but I sure wish more young women pursued music. Your daughter has a good ear apparently, and I've noticed this with young women, that the natural senses of pitch and rhythm are more easily tapped in to. Add to it that young women tend to be more disciplined with practice and have better fine motor skills, and I think we've missed out on a lot of truly amazing female guitar players by making sure it is a boys only club for decades.
A lot of times it takes stumbling on that one artist/band/style that really speaks to you. For me years ago it was watching a PBS blues jam led by B.B. King. I loved how each guitarist had their distinct sound, almost like a singing voice. I knew I wanted in. I had listened to music my entire life prior to that and had a passing interest, but hadn't really wanted to dive in until that. Listening to music with her would probably be more fruitful than shoving an instrument in her lap. But hey, what do I know.

That’s exactly what I have been doing. We’ve listened to music together since the day she came home from the hospital, either me playing or just listening to stuff. She has very diverse tastes, as do I. She used to just sit inside my open guitar case and listen. I guess sometimes she wasn’t interested. The instruments have always been her saying she was interested, and then her losing interest. Never pushed it on her, and she seems most of the time to be content with singing.

Couldn’t find the one I wanted (I have a print in my office), but did find this one with her recreating it at age 12.

Pushing her to take an instrument is probably the worst thing to do (maybe, I don't know) It may not be the worst thing, but it is not good. This is coming from a guy who had a parent who tried hard to push me to do something I had no interest in, and in some respects the gap was never (and will never) be resolved.

Priceless pics of your daughter Mike! Maybe a small keyboard to test out the piano option.

Priceless pics of your daughter Mike! Maybe a small keyboard to test out the piano option. That's what I'm thinking. I have been offered a free piano as well, should I be inclined, but before I go having that moved into my home, I want to make sure it will stick. Although truthfully, I wouldn't mind having it and trying to teach myself how to play it. But the wife is opposed, and you know what happens when the wife is opposed.
