I have not seen one in person. If you have, what did you think? I generally tend toward skepticism; but Martin does have a reputation to maintain, and Ovation has been making acoustics with manufactured backs for a long time.

I haven't played this particular guitar, but I did have an Ovation for awhile and thought it sounded dull. My friend had a Rainsong and it also had a dull sort of sound. So I'm pretty skeptical of non-wood materials (especially at that price point). This of course good be all in my head...

I owned the Johnny Cash X model (called the DX I think?), and I sold it off pretty quickly. These don't sound much like wood guitars, and on mine, the plain B and E strings sounded particularly thin and "plinky". Plugging in and using the pickup didn't improve the tone any.

Nothing to write home about. The ones with spruce tops and non-wood backs and sides are okay for a certain price point.
Stuff like Rainsongs are a God send for people who struggle with humidity problems (highly dependent on where you live), but if that isn't an issue I don't see the appeal.

I own an 000X1 that has the spruce top and HPL back and sides. It was made in Nazareth PA before they moved production to Mexico. The neck is a bit odd. It's a tightly laminated back (Rust Stratabond®) with a synthetic fingerboard that looks something like ebony. The neck has been stable so I guess it's got that going for it. As Lefty Rev noted above, the high E on mine has that plinky sound. I have tried to determine exactly what causes that sound but I haven't been successful. It's not bad for a couch guitar. Its size makes it comfortable for that type of use.

I played a few X series guitars a few years ago. I noticed that the E and B strings get plinky and harsh when played hard. My only experience with a similar-sounding guitar was with an Academy guitar made by Ovation in the early '80s. The Academy had a plastic top and was designed to be set up either as a classical or steel string guitar for students.
The X series guitars appealed to me for the sole reason that their MDF bodies and laminated neck constructiion makes them very stable in dry or damp environments

I just sold a carbon fiber travel guitar to a friend, I’ve had it for a few years and never got used to it. It resonated fine until I held it against my body then it muted the tone and volume.
I like the idea, particularly for camping and canoeing.
