I know almost nothing of the myriad Marshall combo amps that have been made thru the years, but I'm itching to try a new or used combo. Looking for: High gain 80's sound...Priest, Scorpions, early Metallica. Have no preference on tube type, but MUST be tube amp (no modelling for me!) 1x12" combo. 50 watts max. Reverb would be nice! Clean tones don't matter, I can use my PV Classic 30 for that!
Saw some JCM900 models on Reverb that looked interesting (4501?). Or a JTM60? But have no idea what they sound like...or which models have tech issues. Newest Origin amp might do, just have to find a local GC that has one so I can try it out! So, wha'cha got?

An Origin would get you there with a pedal in front.
The tones you mention can be found in a DSL40C. If anything, ditch the stock Celestion 70/80 for a G12M-65 or the WGS ET65.
And one of the best speakers, for those tones, is the Eminence Man O War which is near-enough like the old G12T-75 that Marshall used for most of the ‘80s. I know a guy... 😉
RE: the 70/80 You’ll find those used in modeling amps. A big part of the Marshall flavors was and is the speakers.

You gotta get out and play them.
I've been to several jams with my MG-250DFX 2x12 and had people ask me if I had modded the amp and "what kind of tubes are in it?".
If you want to sound like the Scorps, the JCM800 fits the bill.

The JCM900 line was good, as well. I’d stay away from the JTM30 and 60 amps from the late ‘90s. They had reliability issues.

I can't tell you how many amps I went through, that were supposed to do the Marshall thing. None of them really did. I now have two of the studio series Marshalls, but they're pricey, even used. I have the Mini Jubilee and the JCM800 and IMO they're both fantastic amps with no issues so far.
The DSL line would probably get you where you want to be, but they can be troublesome. I have a friend that went through two DSL40's before he gave up on them. I've read online from others about issues with them, also. I've also read online from many people who love them! So, there's that!
The studio series are made in the UK. They are most definitely better quality. They don't have reverb, sorry.

True! A little bit of delay will work though.

I had a 4502 combo back in the day. The reverb was pretty "meh". But it was the height of my rock swinedom and did the Marshall thing pretty good.

This is probably heresy here but I had a Made in England Valvestate 2000 Marshall AVT-20 back in the day and while I am not the biggest of Marshall guys this really fit the bill at the time. Great 80s metal tones at bedroom volume.

Great 80s metal tones at bedroom volume. I had one, maybe 10 years ago. What really I leased the amp was plugging the speaker out into a 1x12” can with a G12H. That setup sounded very good.

Vintage Jon (Jon Bessent) told me that the last good Marshal amp was the JCM 800 and anything newer were "horrible distortion machines".

I had a pair of 800s back in the '80s, and they were just the ticket for that style of music.
Having said that, I think Marshall is still making a great product.

A really great little Marshall combo from the JCM800 series is the Studio 15. 15w from a pair of 6V6s. 12” Celestion Vintage speaker. The amp even has a post phase-inverter master volume.
It was the first Marshall amp to use the 6V6.
They’re a little above your price range, but worth a look.

Turns out my current bandmate has a DSL40 that he's not using...he switched to a Headrush unit to get more varying tones required for our band. Willing to sell to me for $350...looking forward to picking it up tomorrow!

350 is a good price for one. It’s a great amp for the money . Do check into speaker swaps. I haven’t done it yet. It’s not terrible, but not spectacular either. .
