He and Jonny Lang caught some slack early on for being SRV wannabes. That may have been true originally but they've both branched out and found their own sounds. Kenny has settled into a nice heavy blues rock vibe that I'm really diggin'. I'm checking out a couple recent releases with 2017's Lay It On Down & 2019's The Traveler. Both have some really good tunes that are well-produced. His guitar tones are great and the vocals fit the music well.
At 42, kudos to Kenny for staying true to himself and his music.

I've seen them both. Johnny Lang was billed as a prodigy and is skilled player. KWS is on another level, IMO.

I agree, I like 'em both. It is weird that they both got shade from the hard-core blues freaks early on, because they were good! Same for Chris Duarte.
Things are quite different nowadays. Nobody throws poo at Marcus King for being a younger version of Warren Haynes. And that is a GOOD thing!
Marcus *rocks*.

That's good stuff! It's reminiscent of Chris Stapelton.

Kenny Wayne did seem like another SRV knock-off, but being a kid gave him that something special. He moved past that pretty quickly and what he evolved into was the real deal. His singer, Noah, is a perfect match for Kenny and his blues tinged rock. Jonny never sounded anything like Stevie(in my mind anyway). He could play his butt off, and that voice...how can a 15 yr old kid sing like that? Unfortunately Jonny got away from the blues and moved onto his own thing(but has since moved back to his roots, somewhat). Jonny Lang is my wife's favorite, so I've seen him more times than I can count, always as close as we can get. He is intense, for sure. He can still sing. Although his playing is lighting fast, he doesn't play any scales that I've ever heard before. And I don't care to hear another 20 minute version of Red Light ever again. But alas, I have tix to see him and Buddy Guy again this summer and I'm sure that is on the agenda. Oh this thread was about Kenny Wayne Shepherd.... He's GREAT! ;-)

I saw KWS open for some band years ago. Everytime he started a song I flashed to a SRV song, then he went in a different direction and it lost me.
Haven't heard anything from him since.
I may give him another shot. But if he is still starting off with a known SRV riff....
